"A flat-pack starter kit for any aspiring father. Beware all who enter here, but enter here you must." --Dylan Jones, Editor, GQ

Product Description

When Nick Duerden learned that he was going to become a father, he experienced a sense of anxiety and malaise that, in his more reflective moments, now shames him. He had never felt less prepared for anything in his life. He was 36. He had air miles, a full social life, and lived with his girlfriend in a heavily fortified flat in one of London's more insalubrious neighbourhoods. Where on earth would a baby fit into all that? In the course of extensive research over the next few months, he learned that the majority of men felt just like him. But while there are a great many accounts of the long journey into motherhood, he found precious little to cater for the male experience that didn't, in some way, reduce men to two-dimensional caricatures, and make repeated jokes about beer and breast milk. Fathers, especially reluctant ones, don't want to be talked down to. They want it told just as it is...Welcome, then, to The Reluctant Fathers' Club which, through memoir and case study, aims to provide an insight into one of life's most extraordinary curveballs, relayed with wit, pathos and, most crucially of all, honesty. Nick's daughter is two years old now. She has changed his life considerably, but despite daily exasperation and perennial exhaustion, and a tiny burst capillary just beneath his left eye, he adores her with an intensity that surprises him. Which rather suggests, given his initial reluctance, that if he can do it, anyone can...

This is a brutally honest, moving and hilarious account of the transition to parenthood - a refreshing change from the more practical books I had previously read on the subject. As someone who is new to fatherhood myself, I thought the author articulated the highs and lows of becoming a father brilliantly and there are plenty of belly laugh moments, as well as some cringe-making gaffes which made me feel better about some of my own mistakes! Highly recommended.

I looked long and hard for a book like this when my own wife announced the somewhat scary news that she was pregnant! Nick Duerden's incredibly honest and moving account of his own path to becoming a father has much that will resonate with people who have been through it themselves, and also that will really help those that are about to join the club. The book is laugh-out-loud funny, touching, informative and a definite must-read, not only for fathers and fathers-to-be, but also any mums keen to know what might be going on in their partner's heads... Highly recommended.

A good read 6 May 2009

I really enjoyed this honest account of becoming a dad. I think it would have been great if it had been around when I was pregnant, as the only material aimed at fathers I could find was really patronising e.g. `support your wife, perhaps cook a meal once in a while'. I'm sure that lots of men can identify with Nick Duerden's worries about bringing up a child, and those of the other fathers interviewed, and would appreciate knowing that you can/do muddle through it and enjoy the experience - even if you're not perfect all the time. Definitely one to buy for your other halves, ladies.
