Book Description

1 Oct 1997
An exploration of the search for meaning in life. This work argues that the nature of reason expresses itself in an ultimate need for truth, goodness, and beauty. It holds that this need constitutes the fabric of the religious sense, which is evident in every human being everywhere and in all times. So strong is this sense, it claims, that it leads one to desire that the answer to life's mystery might reveal itself in some way. The book challenges us to penetrate the deepest levels of experience to discover our "essential selves", breaking through the layers of opinions and judgments that have obscured our true needs. Asserting that all the tools necessary for self-discovery are inherent within us, it focuses primarily on reason, not as narrowly defined by modern philosophers, but as an openness to existence, a capacity to comprehend and affirm reality in all of its dimensions.

5.0 out of 5 stars If you ask Why?, read this book 21 Jan 1998
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
THE RELIGIOUS SENSE is a profound book that speaks to the particular situation of modern man. Not only does it incisively diagnose the problem of modernity (as misunderstood freedom and rationality), but it offers a ray of true hope rooted in the fulfillment of our deepest destiny. For the confused Catholic who wonders, Why the Church?, or for the genuine seeker of the real meaning of life (beyond what the culture dictates to us), this book serves as an intelligent and trustworthy guide. But beware!--it just might change your life.

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally! A Realistic Guide to Being *Human*! 14 Sep 1998
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
In this book Giussani goes to the core of the question "What does it mean to be human?" better than does anyone else I've read or heard. He shows us how to live in a way that corresponds to our true needs for beauty, truth, happiness and justice..., and not according to the ideals of the common mentality.

5.0 out of 5 stars Surprising and familiar 18 Feb 2001
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
Overwhelmingly natural, I'd call this book. You get pleasantly surprised at the description of yourself in such a relieving (liberating) way. That's a mighty surprise these days! However, since it does describe you, it's wholly natural at the same time, as if somehow you've always had known it. Well, but could it be any other way?
Exploring a "religious sense" in us, such as our olfactory, visual or auditive sense, it starts by making methodological clarifications, concerning realism, reason, and the pertinence of morality in the use of reason. And then it plunges into you.
For these reasons, it's something to be read by any kind of folks: whether religious or not, christian, jew, muslim, agnostic, whatever! I've known people of all of these beliefs who've read it and loved it.
Magnificent!

5.0 out of 5 stars The religious sense and common sense 18 Jun 1999
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
Luigi Giussani defines the religious sense as the search for the ultimate meaning of things, and I expected to find a rather abstract, spiritualist or pious discussion. However, the book is surprisingly concrete and down-to-earth. Its real-life examples and literary quotes make it fun to read. Its arguments lack any moralism and speak to our common sense and our personal experience.
