Badly reserched 5 Feb 2008
Format:Hardcover
I was complimented to discover that Mike Asher had used a quote from my autobiography Fighting Scared at the start of his book. He opens with the most famous SAS raid of modern times the Iranian Embassy in 1980.

Asher is the first person to name individuals who mounted the assault including the OC B Squadron. Having taken part in the raid I was seriously disappointed to discover that he had the wrong people in the wrong places. When he reports that I in some way indicated that Margaret Thatcher had told us to take no prisoners I was appalled. She didn't say it and neither did I!

At this point I lost confidence in the rest of the book. If it is so poorly researched in the first chapter then it draws questions about the remaining stories.

Vivid and Real 14 Nov 2007
Format:Hardcover
This is the best book I have read about the SAS. There are other histories, but none so complete as this. The author's skill is to make the action seem real - so vivid that you almost feel you are there. At the same time the book demolishes some myths about the SAS, but without reducing the reputation of the Regiment at all. What you are left with is real people not superhumans, and that's what makes the book so good.

By Prospero77 VINE™ VOICE
Format:Hardcover
The SAS genre has become something of a magnet for geeks and gung ho fans since the subject hit the mainstream following the first Gulf War nearly seventeen years ago. Often above critical self analysis, these books and TV programmes have almost become heirs to the 'A' Team style of one dimensional action herosim. Michael Asher on the other hand is to be applauded for his attempt to peel back the commercialism and honour these ordinary men performing extraordinary deeds. The book gives a vivid and lively narrative history on the regiment from world war two through to 1991. The lexis can be descriptive as another reviewer alluded to but don't be put off by this. The language and paragraph structure is very well edited and doesn't bog you down with too many statistics as regimental histories often do. At 500 odd pages and including useful maps and illustrations it is well worth the money and gives an unbiased tribute to a group of men daring to perform the unthinkable in a world that remains ever dangerous.

The Regiment
Nothing that has not been published before. The "Batman" comic style of writing, with ridiculous words appearing randomly in the action scenes - spoiled it for me.
