The events surrounding the trial of Charles I have been remarkably understudied by historians, despite a wealth of information regarding both the proceedings and personalities involved, and contemporary responses and reactions. These essays submit one of the most momentous events in English history to rigorous scholarship, contextualise it in the light of recent historiography, not least regarding relations between the three kingdoms of Britain.

this is an excellent collection of essays about an aspect of the civil wars and the interregnum that has not been as thoroughly studied, namely: the actual trial of Charles I and the various justifications of that precipitate action. I was very pleased to note that one of the essays included an analysis of how Kantorowicz's seminal work of medieval political theology could be applied as a reason for the regicides' actions. Well worth a look for anyone interested in a more specific understanding of the sundry themes and undertones that surrounded and ran through that period in January of 1649 when England's political order was well and truly overturned.
