Book Description

4 Oct 2012

The Regent's Canal, the Limehouse Cut, the Hertford Union and the Lee Navigation collectively cut a swathe through north and east London. This 14 mile path, cycle and waterway is a journey full of intriguing contrasts:

From the amateur sports fields of Regent's Park to London's new Olympic Park.
From the studio where Hitchcock directed some of his early films to MTV in Camden Lock.
From fine period housing to industrial wasteland, social housing and new canalside builds.
From the pleasure boats chugging to Camden to the sleek Eurostars roaring off to Paris.

The use of canals has changed dramatically over the past fifty years from one of industrial transportation to waterfront living and leisure activities. The canals in this book have undergone major phases of rebirth with new developments at King's Cross, Limehouse and the Olympic Park in Newham.
Illustrator David Fathers offers a snapshot of how the canals were formed and how they appear today, in a series of arresting and information-packed pages following a course from Little Venice to the River Thames at Limehouse, and on to the Olympic Park.

'Armed with this distinctive little book it would be easy to spend a few hours exploring and appreciating just one short section of London's canals.'

(Thames Guardian )

About the Author

DAVID FATHERS originally trained as a graphic designer and now runs an internet company. However he has always had a passion for drawing, painting and maps. Nearly ten years ago he was commissioned by the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew and Wakehurst Place to create their first digital visitors guides. These are still in use today. Having lived in London for over thirty years, he is slightly embarrassed to admit that he only 'discovered' the Regent's Canal a few years ago. It was love at first sight. Despite having crossed over the canal so many times, it wasn't until he was on the towpath that he became aware of the contrasts, richness and history of the canal and its environment. An avid cyclist and walker, he lives in north London with his wife and two daughters.

This is a gem of a book. It works both as a guide and as an enrichment of your walking experience along the canal. I could take this walk 20 times and I think that I would still be discovering new things. Beautifulyy illustrated and well written. If only all walking books could be this good!

As I live very close to the Regent's canal this book was literally up my street!
Small enough to put into a handbag or rucksack, filled with interesting facts, anecdotes and charming illustrations, this book has been the basis of quite few walks along the canal and towpaths for us.
Great present for any Londoner(or visitor).

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic little book 9 Nov 2012
Lovely little book. Beautifully designed and illustrated throughout, with a section of the canal on each double spread, so acts as a map as well as guide book. Plenty of interesting facts, but concise enough to take on a walk. Perfect gift for any lover of London, or waterways.
