Anne Gracie has created wonderfully engaging characters in Gallant Waif, and her excellent attention to historic detail provides an exciting backdrop for this well-written tale of love and misadventure in 1800's England. Orphaned and destitute, Kate Farleigh's noble spirit and unflagging strength serve her well in the face of her scandalous past. When she is carried off by the wealthy and imperious Lady Cahill and deposited in the neglected hideaway of Lady C's bitter, war-scarred grandson Jack, Kate hopes she has also found a place to hide. Jack is by turns outraged, annoyed and amused by Kate's feisty, no-nonsense approach to life. There are no dull moments in the story of plucky young Kate and the darkly sexy Jack. Just when they seem to be reaching a tenuous peace, secrets, deceptions and scandalous revelations threaten to destroy their chances for future happiness. Gallant Waif is a real page-turner.

This is on my keeper shelf. It is a lovely story with 2 believable leads. Jack is injured and hiding away in the country, his grandmother manipulates her ward into staying with him as his housekeeper. He is grumpy, chivalrous, rude, loving, kind and arrogant and I adore him! Kate is kind and loving. She was tricked into believing she had married a French officer in the war and is filled full of shame for sleeping with him. She has been ostracised from society. Whilst she is a kind hearted young lady she is no push over and riles our hero out of his stupor. It really is a story of true love and I have read it many times. The misunderstandings between the characters together with their motivation is believable and the ending where Jack rescues her from a horrible social situation is really moving. Highly recommended.

A fabulous and funny debut novel by Anne Gracie. Its a regency historical - or something like that. Although its set during the Regency this is not a comedy of manners - nor is it an adventuresome historical. Rather it is quite a poignant story set with lively characters and some very clever twists.
Basically the story goes that Kate Farleigh needs to work to support herself - when along comes her deceased mother's supposed Godmother, Lady Cahill. It seems Lady Cahill has designs of her own, although they are not horribly machiavellian. Kate finds herself working in the country with Jack Carstairs, Lady Cahill's grandson. He has been living in quiet and bitter retirement thanks to injuries he received while fighting in the Peninsular War. Together they find common ground and they start to heal one another and Jack finds out some very surprising things about Kate....

TALLIE'S KNIGHT: When Magnus, Lord d'Arenville's cool facade is pierced by a delightful small child, he decides it's time to start a family of his own. Time to seek out a respectable wife. But things don't go to plan, because Magnus is so taken with destitute orphan Tallie Robinson's loving treatment of the children in her charge, he totally ignores the blushing debutantes and decides she's the one he'll marry...THE PROPERTY OF A GENTLEMAN: To the dismay of his daughter Eve, Lord Somerville bequeaths his property to Marcus Fitzalan. There's one condition - Marcus must marry her! It's shockingly more like a business arrangement than a marriage. And how can Eve possibly contemplate marrying the man who was responsible for ruining her reputation three years before?
