Intelligent Romance 14 July 2008
Format:Paperback
Nicola Cornick has written two wonderful, fast paced books which almost transcend the romance genre with robust characterization. No swooning maids or wicked step-parents.The heroes are not chauvinistic and the heroines are wonderfully independent minded in a period not renowned for female emancipation.

Very Enjoyable Read 28 Jun 2010
By Cassie
Format:Paperback
As this is two books in one you feel your getting your money's worth. I have to say I read the second story first as it seem a bit more interesting. However I am half way through the first story and I am finding it hard to put down.

The second story is about Lord Lucas Kestrel and Miss Rebecca Raleigh. Lucas is under the misinterpretation at fist she is a courtesan, when she delivers his younger brother who just happens to be half naked because of being mugged to his home. He sees the crest on the carriage and jumps to the wrong conclusion.

So they begin a relationship but Rebecca has a secret about her brother which she cannot tell. Lucas is investigating a treason case where hidden messages are being inscribed in glass. This just happens to be Rebecca's job. When Lucas finds out Rebecca has being paid money for work to deliver more of these glasses he decides to take action. However it is not Rebecca who did this but her dead uncle. Is she or is she not a spy. Lucas believes she is innocent but she is no longer safe because she knows too much. He tells her the whole story why he befriended her and then kidnapped her to his family estate to join his brother, friend and his friend's wife. She and he must pretend to be far related cousins.

Rebecca's job is to look for any object at any of the houses they go to as this will help identify the culprit. However all does not go to plan, Rebecca gets kidnapped by said culprit and must find an escape. The story between Rebecca and Lucas is great. He's in love with her but she can't forgive him for betraying her and lying to her.

The first story is about Deborah and Richard (Lucas's brother). She is widowed and need the help of a man to pretend to be her betrothed so she can attend her brothers wedding and keep her father from forcing her to marry her cousin. She decided to advertise in the local paper for a pretend fiancée. Richard knows it her and he decides to reply and also for all the other replies to disappear. So begins their story. Deborah has been widowed however there is a secret in her pass about her husband. She does care for Richard but she is afraid. This story focuses more on them that trying to find the spy. But is interesting and funny in parts. As I'm still reading it I can just say that Richard and her do become engaged and the more time she spends with him the harder it is for her not to like him.

Enjoy reading.

Book 5 The Last Rake in London - Jack Kestrel

The above books tell the storey of the Kestrel Brothers and Friends during the 1800 and with the final book into the 20th Century.

I have only read One Night of Scandal which I have found to Have a very good story line hope the others are as good.
