Book Description

2 Aug 2011
The Red Garden introduces us to the luminous and haunting world of Blackwell, Massachusetts, capturing the unexpected turns in its history and in our own lives.
In exquisite prose, Hoffman offers a transforming glimpse of small-town America, presenting us with some three hundred years of passion, dark secrets, loyalty, and redemption in a web of tales where characters' lives are intertwined by fate and by their own actions.
From the town's founder, a brave young woman from England who has no fear of blizzards or bears, to the young man who runs away to New York City with only his dog for company, the characters in The Red Garden are extraordinary and vivid: a young wounded Civil War soldier who is saved by a passionate neighbor, a woman who meets a fiercely human historical character, a poet who falls in love with a blind man, a mysterious traveler who comes to town in the year when summer never arrives.
At the center of everyone’s life is a mysterious garden where only red plants can grow, and where the truth can be found by those who dare to look.
Beautifully crafted, shimmering with magic, The Red Garden is as unforgettable as it is moving.

4.0 out of 5 stars Short stories fall a bit short 10 May 2011
I am a definite Hoffman fan. This is yet another good offering from her, although not her best work. This collection of short stories all base around one place, Blackwell, Massachusetts, starts off in true Hoffman style but somewhere near the middle story things become a bit pedestrian. I would still call it a must read for a fan but if you have never read a Hoffman before you would be better off reading Practical Magic or Probable Future first.

3.0 out of 5 stars THE NEVER ENDING CIRCLE 23 Dec 2012
By Red Rock Bookworm TOP 1000 REVIEWER
Just as the Broadway play THE LION KING introduced us to the Circle of Life, so too does Alice Hoffman offer us her vision of this subject via her latest offering THE RED GARDEN. Utilizing a collection of 14 inter-related stories commencing in 1750 and concluding more than 200 years later, Alice Hoffman recounts the cumulative history and folklore of Blackwell (nee Bearsville) Massachusetts , its intrepid founding families and their equally staunch descendants. This is a town known for its collie dogs, its wonderful apple orchards(courtesy of Johnny (Appleseed) Chapman), an abundance of eel residing in the local river, and generations of strong and wise women . Blackwell is a place infected with life, where animals are more faithful than their human counterparts, monsters can be hero's, and love and danger are the order of the day. Even some of the founding families have names we can relate to today like Partridge(family), Brady (Bunch),Kelly(s)heros, well you get the idea. Sound like this "history" is more fantasy than reality. Well, in some of her storylines the author has provided flights of fancy that rival anything produced by the Brothers Grimm. Like most folklore and fairy tales, Ms. Hoffman's narrative, too, is an entertaining escape.

If I have one complaint it is a rather minor one. Several of the stories reiterate information contained in previous chapters. Perhaps the author had originally intended these tales as "stand alone" short stories and as such these explanations would have been necessary, however since this was published as one "novel", I believe a little editing was called for.

4.0 out of 5 stars Strong and Emotional.... 4 May 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This story is strong throughout and keeps you page turning. I think what made it a different read was your awareness of the characters passing away as your swan through the decades of time. As always Alice Hoffman evokes deep emotion through her talented illustration writing and I was very much kept enthralled. Another fantastic read.
