Product Description

Book Description

It was like looking into the crimson depths of a giant poppy. Rifke pulled off her old clothes and slipped the dress over her head, feeling its petal-soft fabric caress her skin. She darted a glance at Ma. Her mouth was set in a straight line. Still she said nothing. The argument over the red dress is the final straw for fourteen-year-old Rifke. Fed up of living in stuffy Johannesburg with her crabby, difficult mother, she snaps and recklessly boards a train out of town. But her fantasy escape doesn't go exactly to plan, and Rifke ends up in the middle of nowhere. With no train home for thirty days, she is forced to stay with the mysterious and unwelcoming van Niel family on their rundown farm. . . and suddenly her old life doesn't seem so bad.

This story of a young girl running away and becoming stranded on a remote farm in 1940s south Africa is completely compelling, drawing you in so you totally believe in the characters and can't put the book down. Rifke's emotional journey is fascinating and believable, great writing.

5.0 out of 5 stars An emotional rollercoaster 11 Mar 2009
Format:Paperback
I was a great fan of Gaby Halberstam's first novel Blue Sky Freedom and was eager to see how she would follow up. Suffice it to say, I was delighted by The Red Dress.

Once again, it was an emotional tale that at times made me smile, and at other times made me cry. The characters were so well crafted that they leapt off the page, and the story was so gripping I could barely put the book down.

I very much recommend The Red Dress.
