First things first you need to read Above Suspicion before reading this book as the 2 lead roles have an ongoing story between the 2 books. After I read the first I was so pleased to see this book out on the shelves. I read it within 1.5 days. I couldn't put it down. Everywhere I went it was with me!. Lynda once again grips you from the start and leaves you crying out for more. I hope there will be a 3rd installment for these 2 detectives. So well written, a sinister crime story well told.

Top marks

As the title of this review says and more. An excellent tale of murder which draws on the very real, appalling murder of Elizabeth Short in LA in 1947. As with most of La Plante's tale's we pretty much know straight away who dunnit, but the suspense lies in the ability of the female detective (a younger Jane tennison) to put the pieces of the jigsaw together.

I very much enjoyed this book and it took me only a day to read, so keen was I to find out what happens. Enjoy!

Disappointing 4 Oct 2008
By J. Curd
Format:Paperback
Well, another reviewer was wondering whether LLP could write as well on paper as she can for the small screen. In my opinion, the answer is a resounding no. The writing is bland, more like a screenplay than a novel. There is little to no tension and the main protagonists seem weakly characterized. There is a bloody plot, as one might expect, but there is little or no detection. Summary: girl hideously killed, no evidence so police clueless, eventual phone tip-off, more ineffective running around, case over. What took nearly 500 pages?

This may not, in the opinion of some, be one of her better books but I thoroughly enjoyed it and like many others read it until I came to the end. Read more

My first La Plante novel
The first La Plante novel I have read-seen several TV dramas so could this be as good? In short yes. Just the right amount of personal stuff without leaving the main plot. Read more

Had high exceptions maybe that was the problem
I read "Above Suspicion" and because that was such a fast paced book, I thought I'd give her second one a try not long after reading her first one. But I was really disappointed. Read more

Load of old rubbish
Predictable boring long drawn out gobbledygook. Totally unbelievable plot, plagiarised from a long dead (pardon the pun) American murder case.

Not great, but not bad either.
This book follows on from Above Suspicion however, with only a couple of references to this previous case it didn't matter that I hadn't read it. Read more

An easy read - I was hooked from the first page and read right through in one long sitting. I hadn't read Above Suspicion first and I don't think that this matters - though I have... Read more
