Product Description

The Red Baron - The true story of Manfred von Richthofen (2DVDs) This documentary tells the true story of Manfred von Richthofen, using sensational original footage shot during the 1st world war. It covers his life from his birth in Schlesien through to the flying exploits of this German hero, including the dog fights which began in June 1917 in Flandern. In the air, the Allies maintained air superiority. All available German hunter squadrons were thrown into the battle in order to subdue their opponent. Richthofen and his fellow pilots mastered the tasks given to them brilliantly. The four hunter squadrons of the JG 1 took over the airspace within an incredibly short two weeks - achieving 40 air victories. Then catastrophe struck and Richthofen did not return after an enemy flight! What happened? The answer to that question, which has been asked for almost a century, is finally revealed in this stunning documentary about one of the greatest German air force heroes.

I was really looking forward to this documentary. It's not what I expected. Old film clips... Repeatedly stuck together.... Von Richthofen is showed about six times getting in to his flying suit... the dog fights are shown over and over again from the same clips... just shuffled about... Also the narrator pronunciation (numerous times) of the hero's name is rather irritating. On the positive side the story is Quite interesting....and the second DVD showing aircraft & equipment of the time is good. But this film is not worth the 20 pounds I paid...5 would be a fairer price. Very disappointing for the price.

Generally speaking this is a good dvd. It covers much of Richoffen's early career well and has an excellent review of the circunstances of his death. However, one or two issues seriously undermine it. Firstly the incidental music is extremely intrusive in parts - so much so that it is difficult to hear the voice over! But it is the second fault which is by far the most annoying factor. The film would seem to have been originally made in German and the English commentary dubbed over. Nothing wrong with that in itself, but the standard of the translation is in my opinion dreadful! The grammar and general use of English is fine, but this translation has obviously been done by someone who knows nothing about aviation history of the period - nor would it seem to have been passed by such a person for comment. Whilst "Fokker tri-decker" maybe an accurate literal translation of the German, it is definitely not common English usage for this aircraft. This on its own is a small point, but as you might imagine the phrase crops up a lot, and its far from being the only example of such clumsy translation.

A great pity, it ruins an otherwise interesting documentary.

I had high hopes for this DVD and I thought it would be historically accurate however it was riddled with mistakes. The biggest one was the further promotion that the RFC created a Squadron just for the sole purpose of shooting down the Red Baron and their belief was based on the squadron having Red Noses. It even claims the 209 Squadron was the squadron. It claime dthey would be rewarded with money and medals for the feat. While I cannot even find in written texts whether The Red Baron actually believed this fact or not I certainly cannot find any proof that that the RFC created an Ace squadron. The closest that could come to that claim was 56 squadron . The red noses found on Camel Squadrons was more a result of the Squadron having once been a RNAS squadron and they allowed their planes to be more highly decorated and usually the colour of the Nose matched the flight and other flights used Black and Blue noses so no squadron ever had a whole squadro with one colour of nose. Even 209 had different colours to match the flight rather than anything else. Roy Brown was in 209 and his camel had a red nose but he was not out solely to shoot down the Red Baron. Apart from this the DVD had some interesting film footage but I don't think it merited two Discs.
