We all hear about the 'cougars' these days. A cougar, by current usage, is a woman of typically 30-plus who seeks to have a relationship (or multiple relationships) with much younger males. Marriage is not necessarily part of the equation, but it can be and often is. Most cougars make the conscious decision to seek a younger male companion in the certain knowledge that, if childless and potentially of child-bearing age and with fast approaching menopause, their opportunities for motherhood are much fewer and the sense of urgency more intense.
Sandy, the heroine here, is not a cougar but a woman of about that age who has just learned that her husband had an extra-marital relationship. She moves town with her children and moves into an apartment above a coffee shop where she later meets a younger man who works there. She is not actively seeking a relationship but one develops when he helps her to look after her children whilst she is at work. The movie shows the developing relationship.
Catherine Zeta Jones plays Sandy and does a good job. Naturally attractive and bubbly, she is very believable and it could be argued that she is essentially being herself. The other lead character is played by an actor I did not previously know and he does his job equally well. The other major characters are perhaps slightly less believable, although the children come across well.
A pretty good effort all round!
