Book Description

In the New York Times bestselling book The Reason for God, Timothy Keller established himself as a modern-day C. S. Lewis who brings together faith and intellect, theology and popular culture, modern-day objections and historic Christian beliefs. Now fans of the book will find resources to help them engage with those same objections, drawing on recent scholarship and debates. The Reason for God video-based Bible study can be used individually, in groups, or by any believer who is engaging with friends who don’t share his or her beliefs. Christians will be challenged to wrestle with their friends and neighbors’ hardest questions, and to engage those questions in ways that will spark an honest, enriching, and humbling dialogue. The Reason for God video captures a live and unscripted conversation between Timothy Keller and six panelists discussing their objections to Christianity. This discussion guide will help small groups and individuals dig deeper into these objections and learn about both sides of the issues. Study Details: Session Titles and Descriptions: 1. Isn’t the Bible a Myth? 2. How Can You Say There Is Only One Way to God? 3. What Gives You the Right to Tell Me How to Live My Life? 4. Why Does God Allow Suffering? 5. Why Is the Church Responsible for So Much Injustice? 6. How Can God Be Full of Love and Wrath at the Same Time? Awards: 2011 Christian Retailers Choice award for Curriculum (Nontraditional) 2011 Outreach Magazine Resources of the Year for Small Group (Curricula)

5.0 out of 5 stars The Reason: Guide and DVD 4 Jan. 2011
By Mike Robinson - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
Looming in front of New York is the Statue of Liberty. The mighty lady hold's a torch of freedom as it has welcomed countless people to America. Engraved on the statue's pedestal is a poem called "The New Colossus." And a different colossus looms over truth, history, and human purpose: God. And in New Yorker Tim Keller's DVD and Study Guide "The Reason for God: Belief in an Age of Skepticism," one discovers a fine popular work that is an outstanding tool that will enlighten believers, doubters, and skeptics. This volume examines many common objections to Christianity while it supplies potent reasons for Christian theism.

DVD plus Discussion guide
- Isn't the Bible a Myth? Hasn't Science Disproved Christianity? Discussion
- How Can You Say There Is Only One Way to God? What About Other Religions? Discussion
- What Gives You the Right to Tell Me How to Live My Life? Why Are There So Many Rules? Discussion
- Why Does God Allow Suffering? Why Is There So Much Evil in the World? Discussion
-and more.
Some objections Timothy Keller helps the reader solve:

- Is there one exclusive way to God?
- Why does God Allow Suffering?
- Why has the Christian Church practiced so much that has been non-Christian?
- Is hell real and is it fair?
- Has modern science disproved Christianity?
- Is the Bible God's word?

In "The Reason for God" one discovers a helpful resource that provides an essential guide to pursue worldview formation; learning how to rightly think through issues as you find out how to share truth with non-believers. He deals with a wide variety of objections, nonetheless he cannot cover them all in great depth, but Keller gives the reader a simple but powerful ground to grow in discernment.

The author also furnishes:

- Reasons that display the existence of God
- The approach that helps you discover the meaning of life, beauty, and morality
- Reasons to affirm the Resurrection of Christ
- The way to find forgiveness and acceptance from God

Rev. Keller as pastor of Redeemer Presbyterian Church, in Manhattan, NY, has a non-threatening, yet profound way of discussing significant problems within human experience as he draws the reader to Christ and God's word.

"The Reason for God" provides many thoughtful reasons for Christianity written in a popular and cogent style with sound and supportive advice.

5.0 out of 5 stars I can't believe this guy is 60 26 Nov. 2010
By Ryan Wolf - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
Keller demonstrates the keenest insight into today's post-modern worldview. His genius is in his ability to dismantle the "tolerance/relativistic" worldview on their terms. He brilliantly reveals how secular worldviews are in fact more intolerant than the Christian view. He does all of this using examples of social justice, beauty, art, and other things that are typically key values to post-moderns. Only after he deconstructs the silly and self-righteous does he bring in scripture. One specific jewel I took away from this book was his exposition of the classic example of 4 blind men encountering an elephant. The analogy is supposed to prove that truth is based on your perspective, but the teller of the example is omniscient--able to see the entire elephant. This is not reality. Humans on earth are all blind and groping about. There is only one Being who can step back and see it all.

This is not your typical Christian worldview book. I say that I can't believe that this guy is 60, because his depth of understanding--and his ability to communicate that understanding--of the 2010 thirty year old post-modern mind dwarfs the hippest, coolest glasses-wearing self-acclaimed thinker (christian or secular) I have encountered to date.

4.0 out of 5 stars Reason for God - discussion guide 25 Mar. 2011
By Mitcavis - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
Provides pretty good commentary for the questions...will aid the discussion leader who wants to generate conversation after watching the DVD. The commentary helps understand the DVD conversations - however, the book by the same title will be needed if you want to train people / or learn yourself...how to have a conversation / apologetic conversation with someone who is indeed struggling with one of this barriers to the Christian faith...
This is a C.S. Lewis "Lite" type book - and much easier for a lay person, or one not wanting anything too philosophical. If you have C.S. Lewis' Mere Christianity or Abolition of Man, this may not add anything new to the subject. The DVD however, presents conversations with people who are struggling and that it rather helpful.

4.0 out of 5 stars Taken from I Don't Have Enough Faith to be an Atheist 8 Oct. 2013
By 4Choice - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Part way thru this book, used in a Sunday evening class at church, I realized the ideas had been taken from I DON'T HAVE ENOUGH FAITH TO BE AN ATHEIST by Geisler and Turek which I found more enlightening. The video that goes with this book is good as a way to learn how to refute the ideas people will use as arguments in your evangelism, but there is more useful science and philosophy in Turek's book.

I got this for a discussion in my small group at church and it was very well received. Not only does it facilitate discussion of hot-button topics in regard to Christianity, but it provides some valuable insight in how to host a healthy discussion.
