Review

‘well written and superbly plotted’
Closer

'Great characterisation and natural sounding dialogue, the pace seems to bound along nicely, and there's a good thread of humour tinged with world-weary cynicism.'
Authonomy, reader review

'I loved the gritty realism and the characters. The pacing is spot on too.'
Authonomy, reader review

'Do not normally read crime novels, but the opening caught my eye. Anxious to read more…'

Product Description

A damaged detective.
A case he’s trying to forget.
A killer who won’t let him…

Detective Inspector Damen Brook thinks he's left his past behind him in London. But it seems a serial killer has followed him north…

Brook's seeking sanctuary. Years in the MET have left their mark - so much so that he's fled to Derby leaving behind his marriage, his teenage daughter and very nearly his sanity to wind down a once promising career in the peace of the Peak District.

But one winter's night, Brook is confronted by a serial killer he hunted many years before - The Reaper - a man who slaughters families in their homes then disappears without a trace.

To find this killer Brook must discover what the Reaper is doing in Derby, why he's started killing again and what, if anything, connects the butchered families.

As Brook becomes entangled in a deadly game of cat and mouse, he is forced to face his own demons by confronting a past that destroyed his family and destroyed his family and nearly cost him his life…

A heart-stopping thriller from a stunning new crime talent, for fans of Stuart MacBrie and Thomas Harris.

There is a very good story here even if somewhat drawn out. It belongs to the serial killer genre, I guess, but there are a lot of psychological games going on to challenge the reader.

Dunne writes very well and there are some great lines and thoughts in the mix. There are some twists and turns too, to keep matters interesting for the most part.

The author leaves a number of issues open, no doubt setting up for a sequel.

The book is quite long and perhaps would have benefited from better editing, including a better proof-read.

I'm surprised this was originally self-published as it certainly beats a lot of what's out there in the crime genre today; with a better editing effort, the sequel may really be something to really look out for. 9/10

The Reaper
This book is superb. Full of twists, turns, and false trails. I had not read any of the reviews when I purchased the book, but can fully endorse them all. I cannot wait for the sequel, and cannot understand why this book was not published earlier. Perhaps publishers are out of touch with what the public want, and enjoy.

I purchased this book after reading a review on a fellow bookcrosser's blog. I'm so glad I did, although having bought 2 further copies for friends and family, it's been a pricey recommendation!

I didn't want to put down the book at the end of the evening, and stayed up much too late on a couple of occasions to get it finished.

Brook is a desolate, flawed individual and it is his character and the way Dunne develops this throughout which keeps one reading, just as as much as the intricately plotted thiller.

Fans of Mark Billingham will probably enjoy this one, and like previous reviewers I hope it's not the last we hear from DI Brook or Steven Dunne.

Very good
I have recently been let down immensely by the books I have read, i.e. The Hypnotist, which was utterly dreadful, so I was drawn into this one from the first page. Read more

Enthralling and exquisitely written
Sometimes a book grabs your attention either by its title or by its cover, here, the cover is quite plain although intriguing but the title is what attracted me. Read more

I bought the book because it was in my recommended list from Amazon, what drew me to it was that Steven Dunne was likened to Stuart MacBride who I love. Read more

good read
I can't understand why the author had to self publish because this is a really good story, well told and gripping.
