Based on notebooks kept by G.I. Gurdjieff's closest follower, this book offers new insight on his spiritual teachings—a way of gnosis or "knowledge of being" passed on from remote antiquity. It is a complete and uniquely authoritative guide to the great teacher's ideas and to his methods for liberating ourselves from the state of "waking sleep" in which most of us live our lives.
Gurdjieff respected traditional religious practices, which he regarded as falling into three general categories or "ways": the Way of the Fakir, related to mastery of the physical body; the Way of the Monk, based on faith and feeling; and the Way of the Yogi, which focuses on development of the mind. He presented his teaching as a Fourth Way that integrated these three aspects into a single path of self-knowledge. Progress in the Fourth Way comes through conscious effort toward a quality of thinking and feeling that brings a new capacity to see clearly and to love.

This book is the most important book on the Gurdjieff Work since ISM by Ouspensky.
It contains the inner teaching of the work, and reveals exercises, insights and years of experience from the notebooks of Madame de Salzmann,
Gurdjieffs closest pupil.
What is revealed here is a gift to humanity and i wish personally to give my gratitude to the estate of Jeanne de Salzmann for releasing material normally only in the domain of the Gurdjieff institutes.
I also believe what is written in this book, holds the keys to Gurdieffs, Beelzebubs tales to his grandson.

I have to agree with the previous reviewer, PC, in terms of rating and conclusion. I wasn't sure about it being "the most important book on the Gurdjieff Work since ISM by Ouspensky" until I thought about it. But it is. I was intending to write more but who am I to review such a book? It is sufficient for me to record my appreciation that it has been published. If you are in the Work or interested in the Work I can safely say that this is a book you just have to read. I know that there are a lot of books on this subject that are unsafe to read!

Jeanne de Salzmann's book is an indispensable survey of Gurdjieff's teaching and valuable for every student of The Fourth Way - an approach to self-development. The chapters are compiled under themes relating to the 'Work' as taught by Gurdjieff. The introduction reflects the importance of Gurdjieff as the master however, as the intermediary, passing on his teachings, Salzmann's mastership becomes apparent as it is her words that interpret the teaching to the reader.
The words relate to the deeper consciousness in a way that immediately effects a change in the Essence of the reader. In this way the book delivers what an authentic teaching must. It is therefore 'alive' and it can be argued that this may also be a guide for those seeking esoteric knowledge despite having teachers in or belonging to other traditions, which sourced Gurdjieff in his search for the Real.
De Salzmann understands instinctively the Truth of this teaching and transfers it into an account for seekers universally. Based on her experience, her expression makes learning necessary of that which 'I am'. She details conscientiously and vigilantly an estimation of a self-journeying that may lead to higher knowledge for the earnest reader.
Very readable, in a clear, reflective style for a conscious reader.
