Product Description

Professional Investor, June 2004

"Stimulating and timely ... well researched and thought out ... recommended for investment analysts, wealth managers and management students alike."

Bob Olsen, Professor Emeritus, California State University

"I like it a lot it's unique. Most books tell the reader how to do it. You've got a guy who's actually doing it. That's important because it shows it can be done." --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

I thought that I knew a lot about Buffett and his investment style from previous books written about him. However, this book gives a new insight into Buffett and his unique investment style. It does this by dissecting his annual reports and reassembling Buffett's wisdom in distinct categories. This makes the task of understanding and replicating Buffett's work so much easier. O'Loughlin has carefully chosen pertinent quotes and has achieved the right balance between quotes and his own comments.

For any student of Buffettology, this is a book that I can strongly recommend.

Many books have been written on the massive success that Warren Buffett has achieved through Berkshire Hathaway. Most of these however have focussed on individual aspects of his success and moreover, most have been written with a 'stockpickers' mentality. This book is different. It takes a holistic view of Warren Buffet's style, not just from the way he selects investments, but also in the way that he utlises them and the managers he inherits. It held vital insights for me as a manager of people (as well as an ex-manager of capital), and at its core is a model that can be extracted from this context and reused in many other situations....maybe there is another book to come from Mr. O'Loughlin?

By Rolf Dobelli TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Hardcover
A sentence crafter happily at work, James O'Loughlin imparts clarity with literacy. On the rare occasion that his industrious research does not find just the right quote from Buffett or Munger (chapters average 90 footnotes), he uses their favorite metaphors from sports and life. This is excellent writing that falls short only on prophesy and damnation. Buffett must pass Berkshire on to an heir in the next decade, but exactly who might follow him is given short shrift. How this unknown magician might cope with Munger (too old to be an heir) is avoided carefully. The manuscript was begun before September 11, 2001, created insurance chaos, but O'Loughlin doesn't elaborate upon it, beyond suggesting that chaos benefits Buffett - whose main float derives from super catastrophic insurance and reinsurance. We recommend this volume highly - along with getting to know the Real Buffett, you will learn a tidy amount about economics.
