Having had the privilege of seeing Ms Walsh perform live recently, it's great to have a largely unmediated version of many of those songs available to get the full effect of her amazing talent.
The upside of the fact that Eva Cassidy was never signed was that most of her recordings were live, or demos taken in one or two takes, which adds a real immediacy and intimacy to her recordings.
The same applies here, with Kate Walsh's brave decision to record these songs 'as live' in the studio, without the crutch of any 'enhancement'. Well, it wasn't that brave - who needs multi-tracking and overdubbing when you have a voice like that? There's never any danger of a false note, or misstep in the phrasing, which carries some beautiful melodies.
As the adage goes, she could sing the phonebook and make it compulsive listening, but it helps that she can write too.
Voice guitar, piano, cello - that's it. Any record that can leave you feeling the world is a better place than you feared is worth 7 quid, surely?
