Review

‘The Gap series is the best work of his career. Donaldson displays a real and rare gift for depicting intrigue, deception, betrayal and the dynamics of the multiple double-cross, and the dizzyingly complex backstabbing arabesques of his cast of resourcefully vicious interstellar slimeballs make this series as funky, grungy and down-and-dirty as space-op ever gets. This sequence has me hanging by my thumbs waiting for the next instalment.’

Product Description

In the far future, gap drives faster-than-light deep space travel, but sometimes this afflicts some with irreparable brain damage. A Zone Implant can turn such a person into a zombie, to protect his shipmates, but it's highly illegal. Ensign Morn Hyland works for the United Mining Company, which is in charge of law enforcement throughout known space. She lives aboard a police ship, together with most of her family; their job is to chase down pirates and other illegals who prey on the weak, or smuggle goods into forbidden space. Her life is nothing out of the ordinary - until she falls in with the pirate Captain Nick Succorso. All of a sudden, the young, strong, beautiful police officer appears to be falling in love - well, lust at least - with the murdering pirate, or so it appears to the folk at the space station's bar. But the real story was quite different . . .

Please don't be put off by the fact that this book is short, extremely dark and ultimately just the preview of what is to come.

It's a necessary step towards one of the best science fiction series that I've read. 'The Real Story' opens the curtain to a dangerous, dark world of the future and one woman's harrowing journey through it. If you've read the Thomas Covenant books then you'll know Donaldon's penchant for awkward, unloveable characters. This series is no different and though the first two books are more background than anything else, the momentum that they provide (used to amazing effect in the last three books) is quite something else.

I can't recommend this series highly enough - if I was marking 'The Real Story' as a stand alone novel I'd probably give it three stars. The series itself goes beyond five stars. Awesome.

Awful... ly good 7 Oct 2004

This is the worst brilliant book I have ever read. As a standalone novel it is sharply disappointing, rough, violent and distasteful. It intrigues and questions, but provides cold, dark, violent and disturbing resolutions.

This book should carry a warning label for adults.

Never the less, as the first book in a series of five, I must strongly recommend this book to others.

Everyone I know who has read this book struggles initially - but for the perceptive, persevering reader who continues with the set, a work of genius is revealed.

I have read reviews that slam this work. I can understand them, had I not continued on with the series I may have even sympathised with them. But anyone who thinks this book is gratuitous, un-imaginative or shallow are SERIOUSLY mistaken.

Read this book. Be disturbed. Be outraged. Be offended. Be persistent.
Read the rest of the series and be amazed. Be awed. Be rewarded.

Can't say I really understand the negative comments by other reviewers. I have read much more graphic, much more shocking and nasty accounts of the nastier side of humanity, (for example Senor Vivo and the Coca Lord by Louis de Berniere) and the only thing that makes this story stand out from the crowd is the relentlessness and examination of the motivation behind the rapes and violence. Don't be put off by the negative comments because,(as others have said), the characterisation, the plotting and counterploting make this a very special series. Treat this book as the pre title sequence from something like Wire in the Blood or Criminal Minds. A shocking set up to a raw look at what people are capable of both good and bad. I think the negative reviews are probably because this sort of examination is not usually encountered in sci fi. Personally I love it and just wish there were more authors trying this sort of thing.

I abhor book-burning, but would make an exception in this case.
A thoroughly unpleasant story. I don't know why anyone would write a book like this and then publish it for all to buy and read. Read more

A good start to an underwhelming series...
My rating is for the series as a whole. I thought this book was a good introduction to the characters and the plot was suitably dark and twisted to get you hooked. Read more

OTT - rape and perversion do not a good plot make
the real story and forbidden knowledge seem on the surface to be written by a gifted writer and have an epic plot, take great sf conventions and make them new and exciting. Read more

Less exciting than the Thomas Covenant series...and that's saying...
I must start out by admitting that I've never liked Stephen Donaldson's previous books. Every one I have tried to read (and some I have tried hard at more than once) has been dull,... Read more

Too dark and gritty for its own good.
I'm all for dark and gritty books, in fact I bought this expecting it to be like the George R R Martin series 'A song of Ice and Fire' series, only in space. Big mistake. Read more
