What I liked about The Real Secret was its no nonsense, practical approach based on good quality research. The Real Secret has cherry-picked the best from a wide range of psychology, science and therapy and made it accessible and do-able.

I found it easy to read and understand, with the reasons for each of the habits fully explained. A lot of self help books are either too sciency or too simplistic, or just give you far too much to do. I also liked the fact that the authors are realistic about how long it really takes to change habits and transform your life.

They don't promise to change your life in seven days, but more realistically suggest that it can take a year to make real and lasting changes.

This is a wonderful general self-help book which can be applied to your life at any stage, by almost anyone. I find The Real Secret is so clearly written and covers all aspects of life today you feel as if you have the wisdom of a sensible aunt distilled into a written form. If I had to sum up the book in a `nut shell' I think it is a manual for overcoming obstacles in life and finding happiness. Steps to real happiness are wise and varied; from the very practical, such as: unopened bills, to emotional issues such as: improving your friendships.
What really appealed to me is the lack of `mumbo-jumbo' and the responsibility for change being put on the reader, rather than being sucked into a blame culture for when things aren't working out in your life. I like the step by step approach to taking greater control of your life and personal happiness. It means that The Real Secret is accessible to anyone and can be worked on at various levels. The sections about creating practical positive habits particularly appealed to me as a way forward both personally and when working with others as a teacher.
After having worked in education for many years, as a tutor to young people, my only criticism of this very timely book is that it needs to be made available to teachers and tutors in order to build emotional resilience and behaviour for learning. Is there an e-book or an interactive version in the pipeline, I wonder?

Well unlike some of the other reviewers I do rather like self-help books as long as you're able to pick out the useful gems and take other things with a pinch of salt. The problem is knowing the difference and I think this book really does solve that. Not only do the writers piece it together well in an easy to read, easy to follow formula, they also include inspiring quotes by inspiring people and also - what I particularly like - evidence based research by neuroscientists and psychologists. You can read it straight through as one read, it is worth doing that to start with, but I think it does also work as a year's worth of work on ourselves. A year? We all want quick fixes, don't we? But what is a year if it changes your life? Aren't you worth it?

Up front, no messing about... an easily read and digested
book telling you exactly what to do when the universe
hasn't delivered! It contains down to earth 'how to's'
delivered in a powerful yet elegantly simple way.

Loved that I balked at the chapter 'Money Matters'...
Having once been neurotic about money, doing my accounts
every week and knowing down to the nearest penny what my
money was doing, what I had or did not have... in recent years
I've thrown caution to the wind, taking risks and challenges
I just would not have if I was still anal with my money.
AND I know it's time to get a little more rigour in there!

So, this is where I stand... about not throwing the
baby out with the bath-water. I share the authors'
cyncism about all the hoo-ha around the Secret...including
it's lack of practical realism and ideas which, without
sufficient explanation and practical grounding, can lead
people astray and disappointed.

And... because of how we can re-programme our brains...
for me, there is a place for using imagination, feelings
and particular language patterns AS WELL AS following
everything in this superb book! It's not either/or but
both/and for me.

I highly recommend The Real Secret to you... as I'm now
doing to both my coaching and psychotherapy clients. It's
a 100% humdinger guaranteed to help anyone who wants to
develop themselves, their life and achieve fulfilment.

Format: Paperback
This is an excellent self-help book that debunks all that New Age nonsense they call "The Law of Attraction". Instead of deluding yourself by asking the Cosmos to sort your life out for you, the authors give you 12 simple, practical steps - one a month for a year - that you can take for yourself.

We all want to be happy but true inner contentment is a choice we can only make for ourselves. The appeal of Asking The Universe is that it appears to relieve you of responsibility for the bad choices you`ve made in life. It makes you feel better but doesn`t actually change anything. If you don`t like the life you`ve got [often because of the toxic relationships you`ve let fill it] then this book shows how you can change it practically and easily.

When I read the book, I had two reactions: the first was the mental pat on the back I gave myself when the authors advised something I was already doing. The second was the lightbulb moment where I thought "Now, why didn`t I think of that?". There were more a lot more of the second than the first!
