Book Description

The authorised biography of Brendan O'Carroll, based on extensive interviews with the hugely popular star of Mrs Brown's Boys.

Product Description

Who'd have thought a potty-mouthed Dublin mammy with a cream cardigan and elasticated tan tights could storm British TV screens and leave a nation helpless with laughter?

Brendan O'Carroll performs to tens of thousands of people a night in packed-out stadiums across the country. In the last four years his TV show has become a number 1 ratings success and he's even making a movie.

But Brendan has had to battle hard for success. The youngest of eleven children, his mother was Maureen O'Carroll, a former nun who went on to become the first woman to be elected to the Irish parliament. Brendan adored his strong, widowed mother - and she later became the inspiration for his indomitable character Agnes Brown.

However, the family endured poverty reminiscent of Angela's Ashes and Brendan saw no option but to leave school at 12 to work. He married young and for decades struggled to make ends meet. Eventually, bankrupt and desperate, Brendan went to see a fortune teller who told him she could see his future achieving worldwide success as a comedian and actor. At first Brendan laughed at the notion, but then he thought of how much his friends loved his gags, and decided to give it a go...

This is the magical story of how a loveable Irishman with a wig and a wit as caustic as battery acid surprised everyone - most of all himself - by becoming one of the best-loved comedians in the world.
It is a story of hardship, heartbreak, and talent and will remind readers afresh that sometimes the facts can be even more extraordinary than the fiction.

5.0 out of 5 stars Authorised Biography of Brendan o'Carroll 9 Dec 2013
By W. Baker VINE VOICE
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
I have watched and laughed out loud at Mrs Brown on television but knew little about her creator, Brendan O'Carroll. I found this very well written book riveting and it was fascinating to learn about his humble chldhood as the youngest of a large family and his mother, who has been his major inspiration, through his early career right up to his current fame. This is clearly a man who has learned his craft and has earned all his current success through his powers of observation, natural talent and hard graft. If you have never seen Mrs Brown or are not a fan, if indeed there are any such people, the book probably won't mean much but for everyone like me who enjoys his comedy persona, to find out all about the man behind the frock, this is a book I strongly recommend that you should read

Having read all the books and being a massively huge fan of the tv series, I have been waiting for this book with great anticipation and I'm glad to say this book hasn't let me down, it has been great to see where the man behind Mrs Agnes Brown has come from the trials he has had to cope with, it has made me feel closer to the whole cast which only goes to congratulate the author Brain Beacon, I would recommend this book to any true fan

5.0 out of 5 stars Didn't want it to end! 24 Sep 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I'm a recent convert to Mrs Brown's Boys, and can't get enough of it! It's interesting to see how he/she ticks and this book tells it all, warts and all. For those who may not like it there are just two words - that's nice!

5.0 out of 5 stars A biography you just can't put down?! 24 July 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Being a fan of Mrs Browns Boys, I was a little apprehensive about reading this book, as I didn't want to have my image of the character spoiled by finding out I didn't like Brendan. I am also not a big fan of biographies as a rule. However this book was a joy to read from start to finish, and it simply gave me a warm glow while reading it. Not only is it an absolutely fascinating story, but it so obvious that Brendan is a thoroughly nice bloke into the bargain. How great to that people like him can overcome all manner of problems and set backs, to end up being hugely successful in making the world laugh out loud.

I bought this with hesitation after reading an unauthorised biography, more as a cross reference. It was fabulous! Well written, poignant at times, hilarious at others! Well worth a read!
