This book is a quick and enjoyable read with lots of tips and suggestions for helping your child to enjoy reading. It is aimed at parents of all ages from pre-school to year 10. It has good, clear explanations of how children learn to read and how reading is taught, phonics, etc.
It's not a "teach your child to read" guide, more about understanding your child's approach and helping him or her along by providing the right sort of encouragement, finding the right books and I think a parent worried about their child's reading progress would also get a lot of reassurance from this book.
There are reading suggestions for different ages - my one criticism would be that these lists are quite short, but there are other suggestions given throughout the book and I like it that Paul Jennings recognises that not all children are going to enjoy the classics, but might be tempted by joke books, cartoons, exciting stories, non fiction, etc. He obviously has a lot of experience of reading to children and writing for children and a realistic idea of what children like.
Because he's a best-selling writer, this is also an enjoyable read. It's well designed, with lots of short sections illustrated with cartoons.
I'd recommend this book to anyone concerned about their child's reading or not sure how to help their child. If your child is making good progress you probably wouldn't need this book, but might find it interesting just for the overview on how reading is taught and what parents can do to support their children.
