After meeting Jim Trelease at a Cobb County symposium in Georgia, I pulled out his book that my sister had given to me a few years back. I have been reading aloud to my daughter since birth, however, I just started reading her chapter books at age six, our first was "Charlotte's Web". Another inspiration after meeting Jim, and reading his book, was not to allow my daughter to view too much TV. We started the end of the 1st grade school year, not allowing her to watch TV during the week. Now as a 2nd grader, she easily accepted our policy on viewing TV. Since turning off the TV, we are able to read, interact more with one another, crafts, bake. It's so much more FUN!! We have really been experiencing the joy of reading together. The laughter, questions, closeness that you just can't put into words. I gave her 1st grade teacher a copy of the book March of 1999, and she is incorporating the Read-Aloud Handbook philosophy: The more you, read, the more you know; the more you know, the smarter you grow, etc. Now I will be giving a copy of Jim's book to her 2nd grade teacher. EXCELLENT, EXCELLENT BOOK!!! I only wish ALL of the teachers in COBB county could have met Jim Trelease in person last March!!! I ALSO WISH I HAD ENOUGH MONEY TO GIVE A COPY OF THIS BOOK TO THE ENTIRE SCHOOOL!!!
