The first in what I see is developing into a series featuring tough-guy, Quinn Colson. It is a perfectly serviceable crime thriller, if lacking a little in originality and depth of character. The book does read a little like a TV pilot in the way it sets up the personal nature of Quinn's return home and the obvious outcome this leads to. There are elements of influence from other modern western genre writers such as Elmore Leonard and Craig Johnson here as well as the male action hero with an army background used as a basis by writers such as Lee Child, Vince Flynn and Matt Hilton. There is just enough here to lead me to believe this could develop into a promising series and I will look to read the follow-up to see how Atkins progresses with the character. This book is a good start and is tightly paced and commendably brief by today's standards.
