This fifth book in the `Haruhi Suzumiya' series of Light Novels is another collection of short stories. This book includes three stories: Endless Eight, Day of Sagittarius and Snowy Mountain Syndrome.

Endless Eight: The anime version of this story is much maligned by fans of the series but this original version is a lot better. The story sees the SOS Brigade doing a number of activities at the end of the summer holidays only to discover that their summer may never end. While it is probably not the best of the `Haruhi Suzumiya' short stories, it is still entertaining with some very good moments. I would give this story four stars

The Day of Sagittarius: This story sees the SOS Brigade challenged by the Computer Society to a battle on a game the Computer Society had designed. This was a very entertaining story that is one of my favourite from the series as it features quite a bit of Nagato. The is a fun, if light, story with some nice descriptions of the computer game and I would rate it at around four and half stars.

Snowy Mountain Syndrome: This last, and longest, of the short stories in the book is easily the best of the three. The story is something of a sequel to the short story `Remote Island Syndrome' from `The Boredom of Haruhi Suzumiya' and follows on directly from the events of `The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya'. The story sees the SOS Brigade spending New Year's Eve at Tsuruya's holiday home in the mountains. While there the Kyon and his friends are caught in a terrible blizzard and take shelter in a mysterious mansion. This is easily my favourite of all the `Haruhi Suzumiya' short stories that I have read so far, easily worth five stars on its own. The plot is both enjoyable and interesting, even if it does get rather complicated in places. The story also gives us a little more information on Tsuruya, which is nice as she is one of my favourite characters from the series.

This was a very enjoyable book in the `Haruhi Suzumiya' light novel series with three enjoyable short stories. The only real problem I have with the book is a slight issue with some of the translation in places but it is mostly a decent effort. Overall I would probably give this book four and a half to five stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic! 30 May 2011

While the first 2 portions of the book have already been addressed in the Anime Adaption, I found the 3rd tale (Snowy Mountain Syndrome) to be one of my favorite SOS Brigade adventures yet! I cant wait until volume 6 gets translated and released in November, and for any fan of the series this book should make an excellent addition to their collection.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good Fun, but Nothing Brilliant 31 May 2011
By Sammy Swartz - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
Haruhi Suzumiya, everyone's favorite eccentric, reality-warping teenager, returns in The Rampage of Haruhi Suzumiya, the fifth book in the ongoing series. Like book three, this novel is actually a collection of short stories that first appeared in The Sneaker, a Japanese magazine. And also like book three, the stories contained therein fail to reach the same satisfying, enthralling heights the best of the series has to offer.

The first story, Endless Eight, concerns the SOS Brigade's summer vacation that, oddly, seems to be leaving everyone with a strange sense of deja vu. It's a fun, lightweight little story with some interesting character interactions, but it also fails to provide anything truly groundbreaking or revelatory to the series as a whole. The second story, The Day of Sagittarius, depicts a gaming tournament between the SOS Brigade and their determined neighbors, the Computer Society. As with the first tale, nothing of real weight or significance occurs here, but it does provide some worthwhile character development. Snowy Mountain Syndrome, the final story, sees the brigade thrown into a mysterious and potentially dangerous environment with no apparent means of escape. This tale is easily the book's strongest, featuring a compelling plot, interesting revelations, and important events that will likely affect future installments. Only its anti-climactic, somewhat unconvincing ending (that creates more problems than it solves) is a little disappointing.

As with the other books, the translation quality here seems a little uneven. It's occasionally difficult to discern which character is speaking and whether Kyon (the series' true main character) is monologuing or talking aloud. Furthermore, some lines are simply poorly constructed and structured. On page 131, one particularly egregious sentence reads, "A bubbling ceramic pot sat atop the portable gas stove that was sitting on the long table as we tossed an assortment of ingredients into the pot to serve as our lunch." Whether this is the fault of the translator or the original author is uncertain, however.

Nevertheless, fans of Haruhi Suzumiya will still enjoy this collection. While it's not as brilliant as the original book, and not as engaging and sentimental as the fourth, it still successfully entertains. Final Score: 3 1/2 stars
4.0 out of 5 stars Awesome book series! 21 Aug 2011

I started this series half a year ago and its got me hooked. I've seen the anime series before and I must say...the books are definitely better. The anime was alright but the books give you more in depth feeling into the characters.
