4.0 out of 5 stars Dare she try? 14 Aug 2003
Format:Mass Market Paperback
Lady Georgiana Halley is rather bitter and twisted about Viscount Dare, Tristan Carroway. Six years ago he ‘charmed her out of her innocence’, which she later found out was on a bet. Trust broken and heart bruised, she has not let herself be in a position of disadvantage since then. Georgiana is rich, titled and attractive. Following the death of his father, Tristan is now one of the impoverished gentry – putting on a good show, but soon he’ll have to start selling the non-entailed property unless he can find money fast. Such as marrying the wealthy, young Amelia Johns.

Tristan and Georgiana move in the same circles, and the only reason she will still speak to him is because he has not exposed her to any scandal by their actions of six years past. However, perceiving that he will not treat ‘poor Amelia’ as well as he should, Georgiana sets out to teach Tristan a lesson. And there the fun begins.

I especially liked the Carroway family – the characters that make it up, the clear affection there, and that Tristan is (as most are in real life too) an entirely different person with his family. Georgiana is able to see a different side to him, and basically she needs to in order to understand him.

For his part, Tristan regrets what he did, if not the event itself. As the object of her lesson, he begins to perceive that there may be some hope for them, and eventually to conclude that if Goergiana won’t be his wife, he’ll have no one. His monetary situation is a factor in their relationship, one they discuss frankly, but their relationship develops only as a trust is built up between them, and this is the central theme.

This book is part of a trilogy, and I’m looking forward to reading about how the other 2 ‘lessons’ go.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good read 5 Mar 2013

I was a bit skeptical when I started reading The Rake because the plot was an old, well used one - the heroine is out for revenge because the hero gave her one magical night, she was convinced they she was having her happily ever after only to find but later that his initial interest in her was because of a wager. After that she was forever cold towards love and hated the hero with vigor and never let him forget that he took her innocence, all the while without considering his feelings or let him explain himself. Then she decides (after six years) that he deserves to taste his own medicine - she will make him fall in love with her, and then she'll break his heart.

Now, the first quarter of the book was ...irritating to say the least, simply because she was so intent on her revenge. I mean, she barely understood what she was doing, but had full confidence in her ability to seduce him, and not feel anything herself...and that she idea that she was to make him fall in love with her to teach him a lesson before he was going to be 'ready' for marriage to Amelia was bisarre. I mean, if everything went as she wanted - he fell hoplessely in love (while she remained cold) she would break his heart, which would probably make him as bitter towards her as she had been, and he would probably not consider them even, because after all SHE didnt fall in LOVE with him six years ago. And in this state she thinks he'll be all okay marrying Amelia like a tamed dog....that part was so clichéd that I was sorely tempted to call it quits there. But due to previous positive experience with D'Alessandro, I continued. I was not disappointed. When she finally put her ideas about revenge and quit denying of her feelings everything went much more smoothly. Thankfully, when they had sex first time, both she and he was honest about their attraction both to themselves but also to each other. When he asked if she had slept with anyone after him, she answered honestly instead if getting mad and ruining the moment or deny or blush madly. I was so glad when the revenge plot was solved before half the book was through. From there the book was very enjoyable, and followed in the patterns of D'Alessandro's style.

All in all, quite good after the slow beginning, though not one of the best of D'Alessandro.
