Book Description

A sudden death.
In Godwin Honors Hall, the walls are draped in black. The college is in mourning for Nicole Werner, a blonde and beautiful prom queen who died in a car crash last semester. She was a straight-A student, and a prized member of the Virgin Sisters, the most powerful sorority on campus.

A feverish obsession.
Nicole's boyfriend Craig was at the wheel that night. He has no memory of the crash, but he is plagued by guilt. For as winter sets in and the nights darken, Nicole's death dominates college life. Candlelit vigils and fetishistic rituals become nightly events -and then the hauntings begin.

A flicker of suspicion.
Craig's roommate, Perry, doesn't believe in ghosts. A no-nonsense type who always thought Nicole was as manipulative as she was charming, he refuses to be swept up by the hysteria. But when he and his fellow sceptics join forces, he too sees Nicole's spirit in the crumbling college halls.

4.0 out of 5 stars a slow starter but gets there in the end 19 Sep 2011
By Debs TOP 1000 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
I very nearly gave up on this novel due to its slow start. In my opinion, the first 100 pages or so could easily have been condensed into 20. I realise that the author was trying to set the scene which was in some way useful to a reader outside of the UK as the novel is set amidst the American university culture of sororities and fraternities; but the point did seem somewhat laboured in places. Nevertheless, I did stick with this book and I am so glad that I did as the story developed into a compelling read. I don't think I have ever experienced such a complete attitude change towards a book - I went from loathing it and not wanting to continue to being riveted by the story and unable to put it down.

As the synopsis says, Nicole Werner died in a car crash; her boyfriend Craig was driving at the time but remembers nothing of the accident afterwards. However, soon Nicole's ghost seems to be haunting the hallowed university halls and even Perry, a longtime acquaintance of Nicole's, and Craig's room-mate, despite his sceptical outlook, comes to believe that he too has seen the supposedly-dead Nicole.

The time frame jumps constantly in the novel, slipping from the period after Nicole's death to a time prior to this, and at first this is confusing as there is no announcement or hint that the time is about to change. At first I found this annoying but it wasn't long before it seemed almost natural and I had no difficulty in following the plot. I am not sure precisely how the author achieved this or when exactly it happened and perhaps this is testimony to her prowess.

There are many different threads going on in this novel but gradually as the story progresses, they are drawn together and all the characters are in some way relevant to each other and to the story.

3.0 out of 5 stars She's dead, but she won't lie down! 26 Sep 2011
By Freckles VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
Nicole Werner is dead. She died, last semester, in a car crash...a borrowed car that was being driven by her boyfriend Craig. At the start of a new academic year, her college campus is in mourning and her sorority sisters have draped the halls in black. Nicole was beautiful and clever. Her death has changed everyone, but sadly, it has all but destroyed Craig. It doesn't help that Nicole's fellow students blame Craig for her death.
Yet someone else was there that night when the accident took place and her version of events is remarkably different from the honour college's take on things. Why would they want to alter the facts? Things become even weirder when Craig and his roommate Perry keep having sightings of Rachel. How can that be? Is it her ghost? Certainly, there are some strange goings on at Omega Theta Tau...the sorority hall where Nicole's fellow Virgin Sisters conduct very odd, and seemingly dangerous, ceremonies. Then there is the beautiful Professor Polson who conducts classes concerning death and the rituals surrounding it. Perry doesn't believe in ghosts.....so he is drawn to the Professor's classes to try and find answers to the riddle of Nicole's appearances. Their research leads to some alarming discoveries and it becomes apparent that all is not what it seems.
An enjoyable read this one, but overly long and rambling in places. The ending is rather a disappointment also. The novel lacks structure and I found myself becoming bored in places. However, I think it would make a great movie. The plot is a good one, the execution not as great as I had anticipated.

4.0 out of 5 stars Don't be put off by the cover... 8 Aug 2011
By mermaid
Format:Paperback
...this is an intelligent, beautifully written and engrossing read. Why they gave it that awful cover is a mystery - I almost didn't buy it, thinking it was a piece of nonsense chick lit. I love the writing and will look out for others by this author.

3.0 out of 5 stars Readable but muddled 13 July 2011
By H VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
If there's one thing I can say for The Raising, it's that it's not the coming of age/straight forward ghost story I expected it to be from the synopsis.

I think the bones of a good yarn are in the novel. It's an interesting concept, a lot of characters are weaved in, and the seemingly innocuous Greek societies rise threateningly in the background. I think though that it suffers from a lack of structure and having a lot of filler description/at times too many superfluous characters. The continual jumping back and forward between the past and present (which isn't usually a problem for me, but I felt that at times the switch wasn't made plain enough for the reader to keep rooted in the right time) made the flow of the book feel a bit stilted and jerky.

I say that, but I didn't have any trouble reading through to the end so clearly it's done something right! I was intrigued by the mystery behind the sightings of Nicole's spirit and the sinister machinations of the seemingly harmless franternity and sorority. There's definitely things to be enjoyed here and I did like Kasischke's turn of phrase even where i felt the structure needed some work.

I reckon this is a good one for young adults, they should enjoy, think maybe I'm just a bit older than what it's pitching at.

2.0 out of 5 stars Don't raise your expectations 28 May 2011
Format:Paperback
Craig returns to college, having been involved in a car crash the previous year that killed his prom-queen girlfriend Nicole; a crash about which he remembers nothing. He moves back in with his straight-laced room-mate Perry, sunk in guilt and paranoia at the blame coming his way. Nicole's sorority sisters mourn ostentatiously, and then Craig starts to think he sees Nicole around campus...

I'm afraid I struggled to get to the end of this, and was disappointed at what I found there. The events of the story are set in two consecutive years, and the narrative jumps from one to the other with insufficient delineation, making for a confusing read as you suddenly realise that you've moved forward or backward in time. Kasischke tries too hard with her characters' characters, practically beating you into accepting that this person is good, that one is bad, you should be feeling this emotion here, and that one there.

Finally, I found the end to be deeply unsatisfying. Of course an author is free to do whatever they like with their characters, but when the reader is left feeling that nothing worked out the way it 'should', it just leaves a deflated feeling.

This had lots of characters and was a good premise that could have been executed and resolved better. I'll certainly try something else by her
