This is a hugely enjoyable and gripping novel which sets the Northern Irish Troubles against the American Dream and wakes up to a nightmare that would make Freddy feel at home. Wil Carson has inherited a hatred of Catholics and he nurtures this legacy under the careful guidance of the Ulster Freedom Fighters. A month in America promises respite from the heated exchanges of the 12th of July but Wil's grievances resurface even before his flight touches down. First love makes Wil a traitor to the loyalist cause when he falls in love with Teresa, a Catholic. But his tribal roots are soon fired up when rejection casts him into a void which only revenge can fill. This is a very moving story which wields humour and horror to expose the destructive influence of a sectarian mindset. Brilliant!

Format:Paperback
Just in his teens, Wil Carson leads a Protestant gang in low-level violence directed against the “Taigs” of his Northern Ireland hometown. His hopes of rising up the Loyalist paramilitary ladder are curtailed when he is selected as part of a peace mission hoping to demonstrate that Protestant and Catholic youths can come together when transported to rural America. Although Wil’s crush on a Catholic girl momentarily slows his sectarian hatred, his history of violent behaviour exerts an intoxicating pull on his dopey American host, eventually leading both into a murderous final act from which there is no redemption. Chilling.

Format:Paperback
A captivating and enthralling tale about a group of Irish youths sent to America on a cross-community project. The organisers of this project learn a valuable lesson....You can take a man out of Ireland, but you can't take Ireland out of a man. Kerr's depiction of the 'hero' Wil Carson is spellbinding, taking the reader on a journey through the eyes of a 14yr old youth as he questions, analyses and finally decides on his battle between his tribal loyalty and his love. As the tale unwinds, it becomes obvious that Kerr has an insight into the long history of communal division, mutual suspicion and alienation in Ireland. The characters and the story are based on that history. A fresh and compelling read...This book is an absolute must for anybody with an interest in the 'troubles'.
