2.0 out of 5 stars Good stocking filler but...... 20 Jun 2012
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is another of the concise books on railways of which there has been a profusion recently. It is full of interesting facts, and would make an ideal present or stocking filler for anyone with a general interest in transport and railways.
This is however not at all suitable for the committed railway historian or enthusiast, who would find little that they did not already know, or have to hand in other books. The information contained within is superficial and lacks detail. Julian Holland's books of similar format contain much more interesting information.
One point in this books favour however is the relatively few mistakes. There are however some notable omissions, for example no mention of "Backtrack" in the magazines section. I think that this book tries unsuccessfully to cover to much in a limited number of pages e.g. Model railways in 16 small pages is an impossible task. Also, much of the information is surely common sense. Is there anyone who needs to be explained the roles of a station porter or booking clerk? Throughout the book are regular 'Pocket facts and Tips'.These are particularly trivial and uninteresting.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect gift 9 Nov 2011
Format:Hardcover
I brought this for my father-in-law and he absolutley loved it. It's got a lovely dust cover plus it's hardback with an embellished spine. It looks really elegant. It's also really involved and has lots of facts and trivia which he really enjoyed. It covers famous trains and busiest stations and is a great gift if you've got anyone who loves trains in your family or circle of friends.
