5.0 out of 5 stars Good Fun For Dick Francis Fans 26 Feb 2009
By Val
Format:DVD
I was delighted to discover this 2 DVDs set of Dick Francis novels. Each 'episode' in the series is a complete story so had to be adapted because of time constraints. Nevertheless, the basics of each novel were there and would be recognised by any Dick Francis fan. The series was originally filmed in 1979 so the clothes, etc. are dated but this added to its charm and the acting and repartee between Sid Halley and Chico Barnes was great. I would recommend this for any Dick Francis fan and for those who had yet to try his books.

I remembered this from the 1970s and managed to buy the DVDs on Amazon. To begin with, the quality of the DVDs is quite grainy. You can see faults of the original Master tapes. I wasn't put of by this as I love Horses and good quality acting. Mike Gwilym played a character who was more human then most detectives of the time. I always thought that the professionals with Martin Shaw lacked any character. A bit like two cardboard cut-outs with no personality. Don't get me wrong...I love Martin shaw's recent work. Gwilym plays a Jockey who is disabled when falling of a horse in a race. He turns private detective, thanks to his father in law, and has a partner played by Mick Ford. The banter between these two guys is very funny at times.

They(Yorkshire Television) only made 6 stories, which is a shame. I guess the programme wasn't a sucess. If you are thinking of buying the DVDs I surgess you read Dick Francis's Book first. If you like the book then you will love this.

Loved this first time round many many years ago. Still good. Dick Francis books are always good - great stories. Mike Gwilym is the perfect choice for Sid Halley.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Racing Game 7 Mar 2014
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
As a long-term fan of Dick Francis, I was pleased to find this collection. As a Member of the Armed Forces for 24 years and then an ex=pat in Cyprus for over 30, I missed many series on British TV. This series is excellent and much better than I expected. Strange to find Wally Batty (I can't remember the actor's name) as a farm lorry driver in one episode, I don't recall seeing him in anything else but LOTSW.
