'Fascinating and harrowing in equal measure...' (Daily Express )

'An incredible journey of rediscovery.' (This Morning, ITV )

'There are moments of profound insight . . . read this book and then hide it from the kids!' (Jewish Telegraph )

'The mantra of sex'n'drugs'n'rock'n'roll might have been coined for Reva Mann . . . the book at times makes one gasp aloud, she has done a service by opening a window on the strictly Orthodox world.' (Jewish Chronicle )

'Gripping, harrowing and devastatingly honest.' (Naomi Alderman )

'A fascinating journey . . . This is a searingly honest account of one woman's struggle with her faith and her health.' (The Good Book Guide )

'Makes for riveting, compulsive reading.' (Elle Magazine USA )

'For all her industrious bad behaviour, it is the quieter episodes of this candid memoir that are the most interesting; illuminating a quest of universal interest and fascinating local detail' (Daily Mail )

The Jewish Chronicle

The mantra of sex'n'drugs'n'rock'n'roll might have been coined for Reva Mann ... the book at times makes one gasp aloud. She has done a service by opening a window on the strictly Orthodox world. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

tragic, i expected an interesting rebellion instead I found a rather tragic women desperate to cling on to her youth, clutching at straws (drugs, sex, orthodox judaism) to ease her 'pain' - struggle to see where the hardships she faced came from - parents who did everything for you (albeit being a bit mad, but other people survive a lot worse and come out ok!), disabled sister who repulsed her so much she never bothered taking the time to visit her...The book left me furious and pitying her children. I tried to give this 0 stars but couldnt.

Although I did enjoy this book I have to admit at many points during the book Reva just annoys me. She never really changes or learns just goes from one extreme to another. She never really takes responsibility for her own actions just blames everything she does on her parents. She tends to be selfish e.g. on attending the funeral of a suicide bombing victim all she dwells on is herself and her own pain rather than that of the mourners. It just becomes fustrating and you want to wack her over the head.

I also do have some minor concern for her children who have to put up with her swinging this way and that with religion and who can hear her having sex with men and witness her relationship with men going totally against everything she has ever taught them. She then claims she is a good mother.

I also found it a little unneccasirily graphic in places e.g. sex scenes which would concern me as she writes on her website she would like her children to read it one day. She also glosses over some parts I would have liked more detail on e.g. her first pregnancy which goes from her concieving to her in labour. It would have been nice to see how she and her husband handled her first pregnancy. It would have also been nice to have some better sense of timelines in parts I was very confused at how old each of the characters were.

As I said I did enjoy this book and would suggest reading it but I most certainly wouldn't praise Reva Mann for her actions or bravery. I would tell her to get over herself and start taking some responsibility and seek some serious counciling.

Nauseating 7 April 2011
Format:Paperback
I really disliked this book. The writer does not come across at all well, but rather as a difficult, self-obsessed, and attention-seeking individual who seems never to learn from her mistakes or take responsibility for them. She is then horrified by the situations she finds herself in, as if they are not of her own making. Her extreme vanity and apparent conviction that all men should find her sexually appealing - certainly, she views men in sexual terms only - made me struggle to empathise with her in any way.

Helped me understand the jewish religion
This book helped me understand a little bit more about the jewish religion, but someone who has had no contact with the jewish religion would find it hard to understand some of it.
