Thomas was probably best known for his work in gathering and popularizing old and new shrub roses. In addition to having an encyclopaedic knowledge of horticulture, Thomas was an artist whose paintings and drawings illustrate many of his books.

He was awarded an OBE and is one of 63 holders of the Victoria Medal of Honour. The RHS awarded him the Veitch Memorial Medal as well as their Gold Medal for his paintings and drawings.

diary 16 Oct 2010
I buy the RHS desk diary every year. This year I wasn't so sure this was the usual diary, as it is defined as a calendar. It is in fact the hardcover desk diary I always get. And it is, as usual, very beautiful, with many delicate botanical drawings of flowers, many roses. Many people I know comment on its beauty. I also like to have the entire week on one side of the page, and the picture on the other. Although it is hardcover, the diary isn't heavy or bulky.

I was given my first RHS diary as a present in 2004 and it's been a must-have for me ever since.

It's A5 in size with a week to view on one page. What makes it so special is the other page is reserved for a magnificent botanical illustration from the RHS' collection. This year's is extra special because it features the work of Graham Stuart Thomas: one of our best plantsman of recent years. I volunteered for a while at the National Trust's headquarters, documenting what's in their archives. For many years Graham Stuart Thomas was their Gardens Advisor and I always felt like I'd found a piece of treasure whenever I came across his work, whether it was a re-design of one of our great gardens, or just a simple letter to a Head Gardener suggesting some suitable plants for a particular border.

I never found any drawings whilst I was there and it's great to have the chance at last to see what a fine botanical illustrator he was. Each week is a visual treat.

This is a fine present for any garden lover or artist with a passion for botanical illustration.

RHS Desk Diary 15 Nov 2010

A good sized diary. One page per week (Monday to Sunday) with a most attractive flower illustration on opposite page. Interesting notes for each illustration.Good quality paper and printing, with a crisp, clean look to the pages. I bought three, one for myself and two as presents. I like mine very much and the one already given as a birthday present was much appreciated by a lady who also likes flower pictures.
