A Great Epic 10 July 2011
By M. Dowden HALL OF FAME TOP 50 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is the 1870 translation by Ralph Thomas Hotchkin Griffith of one of India's great epic poems. Translated in verse this is easy to get into, but be advised that it is long and takes some time to read, also to fully understand all the parts of this it probably takes more than one reading. A spiritual tale this takes in right living and other such topics.

Although there is no table of contents according to the 'Go To' function, if you click on cover, then you are taken to a fully active table of contents, also the poem itself has active footnotes, so just click on them if you want more information. There is also an appendix to this truly great poem.

To be honest there is no way to do this justice here, as there isn't enough space to be able to type in a detailed description. However this was hugely influential throughout South East Asia, not just in India itself, and has spawned other Ramayans. Tradition says this was written by Valmiki, the First Poet, and although I don't know whether this can really be proven to have been written by him, many believe that it was definitely written by one hand. If you want something that will keep you enthralled then get this, the ideal treat (also it is free).

epic poetry at its best 27 Dec 2007
By Sawyer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
With all due respect to the above review, this book was not written as a "fast read", or meant to be "devoured in a single sitting." It is a meticulously translated tale of ancient India, with all of the greatest elements of a great story thrown in - treachery, redemption, adventure, murder, passionate love, family dynasties, greed, etc. If you can read above a sixth-grade level, this book will richly reward every moment you spend with it. Thrones are toppled and regained, love is experienced in all of its richness and despair, and the adventures the hero has to live through are guaranteed to keep you on the edge of your seat. All kinds of demons and monsters are fought and conquered. Yes, the translation is old-fashioned, but so beautiful that only the most determinedly modern reader will balk at reading it. It is well worth the time and thought that it will require.
