Eve Edwards has a doctorate from Oxford University and thinks researching a large part of the fun for writing historical fiction. She has visited Tudor houses, attended jousts and eaten Elizabethan banquets to get the sights, sounds and tastes right for this book. 4.0 out of 5 stars The Queen's Lady 16 Feb 2011
By Vicki @ Cosy Books TOP 1000 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback
Last year I read and thoroughly enjoyed Eve Edward's debut novel, The Other Countess (Review here) and was more than a little excited to see a sequel planned. Having finally just finished I can say that excitement wasn't in vain. Reading The Queen's Lady was like slipping into a comfy and familiar pair of slippers and once again Eve Edward's evocative writing whisked me away into the world of Queen Elizabeth I's court and Tudor England.

The Queen's Lady focuses on the story of Lady Jane Rievaulx (nee Perceval), a character who although only played a minor role in the previous book, I had very much enjoyed and hoped to hear more about. We join her as the recently widowed Marchioness, still young at only eighteen, devastated by the death of her elderly husband, who through kindness and friendship had saved her from her own family, and now at the mercy of her greedy and wicked stepsons who want back what they believe rightfully theirs. Taking refuge as a lady in waiting to the Queen, Jane is delighted when James Lacey returns to court and the feelings she once held for him are as strong as ever. However James is dealing with the demons of war and feels unworthy of the beautiful Lady Jane. In an effort to rid himself of the ghosts he carries and to save her from himself he embarks on a dangerous journey to the newly discovered America. Only his absence puts Jane more at risk as her family plans to marry her off once again for their own benefit.

I liked Lady Jane just as much this time round as I did the first. She's a young girl used as a porn in the courts games and seen only as an asset by both her family and the noble men around her. I felt so angry at her treatment at times and can't imagine what it would be like to have such pressures and expectations from society on you.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Queen's Lady 14 April 2011
Format:Paperback
Eve Edwards is a historical fiction lover's dream! In 'The Queen's Lady' she combines rich sumptuous period detail with a spellbinding love story and lovingly crafted characters.

The story focuses on Lady Jane Rievaulx, who is now a lady-in-waiting to Queen Elizabeth. She was first introduced as a peripheral character in 'The Other Countess but here gets to take centre stage. She believes that she may at last have found some small comfort and security in the Queen's court, until she finds herself being coerced and blackmailed by her family into an unwanted marriage. Her heart however lies elsewhere but she may not be free to follow her true desire.

Also reappearing from the first novel is the Lacey brothers - Will and James. Will has now settled down and is happily married but his younger brother, James, is haunted by his recent experiences in the Low Countries. To try and recover his spirits, he is about to set sail on a journey to the Americas but he leaves his heart behind with Jane who needs him more than ever. I loved the relationship between these two characters. They're both only eighteen years old but they've each experienced a lot in their short lifetimes and are living in a period when people were getting married and having children at a much younger age. The scenes in the book that they share were definitely among my favourite passages. They may get off on the wrong foot but when misunderstandings are put aside they fall madly in love and are perfect for each other!

Set in 1583, attention is paid to recreating the sights, sounds and smells of Tudor England. I felt transported back to an entirely different age.

Although you don't have to read The Other Countess first to follow The Queen's Lady, I do advise it - I think to be invested in a love story, it helps to see how the couple met and how they first developed feelings for each other. It definitely made The Queen's Lady better for me that I was already rooting for this couple from the first book. James and Jane are already in love before The Queen's Lady begins and they actually don't have that many scenes together - James journeys to America, so they mostly long from afar.

In other hands, this could have made The Queen's Lady a disappointment, but luckily, Eve Edwards is still skilled at keeping her romances as light, fizzy and delightful as a glass of champagne. All the best elements from The Other Countess are present here - the witty dialogue, the swoonworthy men, the courtly glamour - and especially the use of charming supporting characters. James's African servant, Diego, and Jane's seamstress, Milly, pretty much run away with this story. And once the full Lacey clan turns up, the banter is back and the scenes between the siblings still go from rib-ticklingly funny to heart-warmingly sweet.

The fun scenes and the happy endings are why I like this series. Things always wrap up so merrily and you'll find no complaints about the lack of gritty realism from me. It's just too nice to read something and know that it will leave me smiling.

5.0 out of 5 stars wow, what a book!! 3 April 2012
Format:Paperback
well, I must say, I cannot wait to read the other book!

The story is centered around Lady Jane Rievaulx(nee Perceval) who, following the death of her husband, sets up as lady to the queen. She then meets James Lacey, the brother of the man she jilted in The Other Countess.

sparks fly, a romance like no other blossoms and it seems that there will be a happily ever after, but Jane's scheming father (whom we thought she was well shot of) makes an appearance - just as James leaves for America. Oh, and he's up to no good. And is on the side of Jane's stepsons, who want her wedding ring back. what FUN!

I won't spoil it for you, future readers, and those who have read it know what happens, so there we go. end of.

The book itself is amazing, at times funny, at times serious. I wanted to scream with frustration at Master James, and with anger at the stepsons. The book takes you right into the era - no mean feat, I might add!
The flowery language amused me, as even when angered they still managed to be polite.

Cannot wait to read The Rogue's Princess, and follow Kit, as I can tell he will be an amusing narrator!
