Book Description

6 Jan 2000

It's a busy year for the Queen - she has lots of important events to attend. Meanwhile, a little girl is wondering what knickers Her Majesty will choose to wear on a school visit! Will they be her 'at home' knickers - adorned with corgis - or her 'garden party' knickers, or perhaps her woolly Balmoral ones...?

Both children and adults will love this very special and endearing insight into a child's imagination, from the best-selling author-illustrator of Father Christmas Needs A Wee and Jesus' Christmas Party.

Recently, the Queen visited a nursery in Norfolk and enjoyed a display based on the book:

"...just to make it special, there was one element that was not quite so traditional: pants. These were not just any pants, either. They were the Queen's Knickers, and at Dersingham Infant and Nursery School, in Norfolk, they were put on special display in honour of their royal visitor" ~ Valentine Low, The Times

Review

"The Queen is not a subject beyond humour; a welcome, gold-embossed reissue of Nicholas Allan's picture book The Queen's Knickers takes a cheerily irreverent look at royals" (Julia Eccleshare Guardian)

"Humourous, entertaining and a little bit naughty, this classic has been revived with a eye-catching new cover for the Jubilee, the story inside is as brilliant as it has always been . . . Pairing a tongue-in-cheek story of how the Queen chooses her undergarments, with charming and warming illustrations, creates a book to be loved by children of all ages" (Book Keepers)

"A jolly story . . . This one made my four-year-old son hoot with laughter" (Lorna Bradbury Daily Telegraph)

"This new edition will hopefully bring the book to a whole new audience of knicker-making monarchists" (Independent 2012-04-29)

"This is a knockout . . . Affectionate, funny and entirely delightful" (Books for Children)

I first read this book with the children I teach in a Reception Class in a village school. Not only did the children thoroughly enjoy the book, ( it was read on several occasions at storytime) but I then went out to buy it for myself and will be giving it as presents for all my adult friends! Altogether a great read, very humorous and well worth a look.

I read this book to my class of infants (4-7 year olds), and they thought it was wonderful! They especially loved the slightly risque title. There was quite a lot of giggling when they heard it. Anything to do with bottoms always goes down well! A whole story about knickers couldn't fail to appeal. The class was already a big fan of Nicholas Allen...they particularly love "Jesus'Christmas Party". We used it for our Nativity Play, and The Queen's Knickers has joined it on their favourite story list. The illustrations are extremely good and very funny. This book is going in our Story Sack Library where it is sure to be constantly out on loan!

5.0 out of 5 stars Hillariously funny! 10 April 2003
Format:Paperback
Any mention of the word "knickers" is guaranteed to get small people giggling. This book certainly captured the imagination of my 3 year old, although I think I probably found it even funnier than he did!

This is a charming and beautifully illustrated book - BUY IT!

5.0 out of 5 stars Lovely book, very small! 4 May 2012
By Alveron
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
As other reviewer's have said, this is an absolutely lovely book.
I have been driven to write my first ever Amazon review though, just to let you know that the edition is very SMALL (14cm x 10.5cm; or 5 and a half inches x 4 inches) not all that much bigger than the palm of my hand. It is called a 'mini treasure', so maybe I should have expected that, but I just thought I'd point it out incase you were expecting a full size book, as I was. The contents are brilliant!

4.0 out of 5 stars Lovely story for younger children 21 Sep 2010
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
My children thought this would be a funny story because of the title it had. They were right it is good. It is full of pictures of the type of knickers the queen might wear for various events eg holly knickers for Christmas and union jack knickers for international events etc. It tells a bit of a story about her knickers getting lost and ends with what knickers would the queen wear if she visited school. It takes about 5 mins to read.

I think this book would be best aimed at younger children 3 - 5 years. Although there are some references to things such as "parliament" that they would not necessarily understand. Any older children would enjoy the book once or twice but then the novelty would wear off. I think my 7 year old expected it to be funnier than it was.

Lovely book, lovely illustrations. Provides opportunity to discuss favourite knicker pictures and what the queen is like.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Queen's knickers are of great concern 30 Mar 2010
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
A happy, silly, funny book about the Queen's knickers. She has so many different ones for all kinds of occasions. Anything mildly naughty sets the children off into fits of giggles, after all one doesn't normally speak about this subject. Great illustrations. Open up a discussion on children designing their own knickers?
