Product Description

A doomed kingdom, a young queen’s sacrifice and a killer who will bring an empire to its knees...

In a world where men share kindred with beasts, the Idol of the Beasts predicts a child who will end the Endless War after centuries of strife, but first the enemy king must die and his son be brought to the Jashimari Queen in chains…

After numerous failed attempts, killing King Shandor seems impossible, until an assassin offers to do the deed. His success places the Crown Prince at Queen Minna-Satu’s mercy, and Blade becomes the instrument of her wrath. Forged in the fires of fury, his heart died long ago in the desert kingdom. His glance is as icy as his smile is disarming, and the fires of passion will never stir his blood. He is the Master of the Dance in Jondar, the best to ever hold the title.

Driven by hatred and with the skills of his trade, he will usher in a time of strife and pain that will live in legend, and forever bear his name. He is the instrument who can change fate. He is the Queen’s Blade.

- - No spoilers - -

An epic fantasy tale about a young queen, Mina, who looks for a way to broker peace between her kingdom and its enemy, after generations of war. An assassin, aptly named Blade, sets out to aid her in her quest, and eventually becomes one of her trusted advisers and one of her prime tools in achieving that goal.

The Queen's Blade is very well written, with excellent pace and some exciting action scenes. The exploits of Blade are well thought-out and executed. The formatting was a bit off at times, with strange indents etc., but overall it's a smooth read. My main trouble with the novel is that the plot is pretty straightforward, and very few subplots that do not appear to be more intricate. My main disappointment - as someone who puts much stock in character development - was the lack of depth in characters. They have their motivations and backgrounds, but they seem to lack true depth and were often conveyed through telling, instead of showing. That's a pity, since the main characters show promise.

Another matter that bothered me was the abrupt, cliffhanger ending. I understand this is the first novel in a series, but I prefer a more defined ending than The Queen's Blade has.

If you are looking for a fast-paced fantasy with some good action, and don't mind a somewhat linear plotline and the lack of depth in the characters, this is an excellent free e-book. If an intricate plot and character development are important to you, this novel might be a disappointment.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Cracking Read 8 Aug 2011
By Trish
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase

Read this in one sitting, from start to finish I couldn't put the it down. In fact, I was so engrossed in the characters, the plots, and the settings that I couldn't believe I had hit the last page with nowhere to go except purchase the next book.

And purchase I have.

I urge anyone who wants something a little different to dive into this series without the aid of a safety net.

All Praise to T C Southwell, another author, whom I would not have known about but for the kindle recommendations.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant! 10 Oct 2011

Format:Kindle Edition
What a great read! I couldn't put this down and when I got to the end, I bought the rest of the series and was no good to man or beast until I had read the lot.

No long winded waffles about anything, just solid real time action and observations. Fight scenes left me tense as the characters made mistakes or slipped up as would happen in reality and then breathe again at the end. The idea of the familiars was great, and not over the top, almost like skin colour in the real world, it blends in and adds depth rather that detracts.

The fact that the main character is not a super human, all invincible, or knuckle head, but a guy who has been given a rotten start and made the best of what he has got, is so refreshing. I was able to connect with this character very quickly as well as most of the other characters. They were all likable and normal. I laughed, cried, got angry, tense, relieved.....well, everything you want from a story.

Well done to TC Southwell, what a great series. I have now started another series from this author.

A read that you can't put down! The storyline is well thought out and moves at a good pace, albeit a tad predictable. The characters are believable and easy to relate to, I look forward to reading the next!
