What could have been a detailed investigation into whether Elizabeth and Leicester had a child has turned into a novel of disappointments. The story line is badly developed, the speech of the characters is inappropriate for the time, and written with an American's idea of how they spoke in the period, the actual characters themselves seem to have been based on trashy novels rather than on what we know of the real people. For all those interested in Elizabeth this book will disappoint them and they will wonder what they spent their money on. I recommend reading something else.

A fictional exploration of an historical 'what if...', this novel draws you in, fascinates with possibilities - and so what if it's not 'real'! It brings history alive and raises questions about what we can rely on in the past. And not only that, it's a great story, rich with historical flavour, which has you intrigued and gripped to the very end.

Don't read this if you're a stickler for history in historical novels - this is pure fantasy! However what could have been a good story was marred by lacklustre execution - it's not bad, just dull.

Maxwell's Elizabeth is a one-dimensional character who is passionately in love with Leicester, gets pregnant, has a child and then - unbeknowst to either of them - the child is substituted for a dead child by Kat Ashley with the connivance of Lord Cecil...

The meeting of Leicester and the now-grown Arthur is particularly maudlin and sentimental. Really I think this is a 2-star novel with occasional 3-star sections - not a huge recommendation, I'm afraid.
