KAREN HARPER'S 6TH BOOK IN HER ELIZABETH 1 SERIES IS A MOUTHWATERING FEAST. I LOVE HOW HARPER DETAILS RECIPES AND MAKING DECORATIONS AT THE BEGINING OF THE CHAPTERS. YOU FEEL LIKE YOU ARE WALKING, TALKING AND FEASTING WITH ONE OF HISTORY'S MOST FASCINATING MONARCHS. THE ATTENTION TO DETAIL IS SECOND TO NONE.

THE BOOK BEGINS OVER A YEAR SINCE The Thorne Maze: An Elizabeth I Mystery. QUEEN BESS ANNOUNCES THAT LONDON WILL CELEBRATE A YULETIDE OF OLD AND DECLARES THE TWELTH DAYS OF CHRISTMAS. IT IS ON CHRISTMAS EVE THAT ONE OF HER KITCHEN SERVANTS IS FOUND HANGED AND TRUSSED LIKE A PEACOCK THAT HE HAS BEEN FASHIONING FOR THE HOLIDAY FEAST. WHO IS THE KILLER MOCKING? ELIZABETH OR HER FORMER FAVOURITE LORD ROBERT DUDLEY WHO'S NICKNAME IS "THE PEACOCK" AND SO THE RACE BEGINS TO CATCH A KILLER WHO DELIGHTS IN SENDING MESSAGES WITH LINKS TO THE CHRISTMAS FEASTS.

SOMEONE IS DETERMINED RUIN THESE FESTIVITIES AND ELIZABETH BECOMES INCREASINGLY DISTRUSTFUL OF ALMOST EVERYONE INCLUDING HER MOST TRUSTED COURTIERS AND EVEN ONE OF HER PRIVY PLOT COUNCIL.

WITH SO MANY RED HERRINGS THROWN INTO THE POT, ELIZABETH EXPOSES THE VILLIAN BY SETTING A TRAP AND THE NOVEL COMES TO A TERRIFYING CONCLUSION.

THE PAGES OF THIS NOVEL COME TO LIFE WITH THE COLOURS, SMELLS AND DELICIOUS DESCRIPTIONS OF CHRISTMAS FARE AND TRADITIONS OF TIMES GONE BY. SO IT IS WITH AN HEARTY APPERTITE I LOOK FORWARD TO HARPER'S NEXT BOOK IN THE SERIES The Fyre Mirror: An Elizabeth I Mystery (Elizabeth I Mysteries).

very, very silly 30 Sep 2009
Format:Hardcover
One of the silliest historical crime novels I've ever read. The author's research may be good but the story is the equivalent of the Hollywood Pride and Prejudice films - jaw-droppingly unrealistic and gratingly American in parts.

Format:Mass Market Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is a jolly little book, giving a quite well-researched insight into the customs of a Royal Tudor Christmas. As usual, ER I has to solve mysteries which involve high explosives and her dressing up as a boy.
