Review

“Readers will be spellbound, not only by the plot's ingenious twists and turns, but by the powerful webs of humor and sorrow, differences and commonalities, love and loyalty that bind this memorable cast together. “ Kirkus Reviews

It features a power struggle of potentially catastrophic proportions as war erupts when Attolia's Queen chops off the hand of the Queen of Eddis's Thief for spying. This complex plot, with its fiendish political twists, is set in a country similar to Ancient Greece, with its own set of interfering gods and goddesses. The Thief, Eugenides, returns a broken man to Eddis, but is roused from his despair by a messenger from the gods telling him to stop whining and start saving the situation. Young teenagers will be fascinated by its ingenious plot and wry humour, and by the fascinating cast of characters that people this ancient landscape. Financial Times

better than the first 26 May 2011
By Ali
Format:Paperback
This is written in third person with a varying POV, usually Eugenides (Gen from the previous book), and the Queens of Eddis and Attolia. This change is a bit of a shock, especially so soon after reading The Thief. It works well though. We can no longer just be focused on Eugenides, we must get inside the heads of the others. I think that this story better suits third person narration. I have knocked a point of because of some info-dumpy segment which were probably necessary to keep the book concise but annoyed me none the less.

It's so hard to try and talk about though, because a huge life and story changing spoiler occurs page 32 that made me want to scream and cry. The fallout of this causes a war between Eddis and Attolia, one which give the story its overall arc. It's full of plotting and intrigue and battle plans which I love, so I was very happy indeed and all in a relatively short book. At the same time, the characterisation was not at all compromised.

Gen is so clever in a way I didn't appreciate in The Thief. He grows up a lot, both because he has to and because he himself is growing up and entering a bit more into adulthood. The Queen of Eddis clearly has a soft spot for her Thief and worries about him when he is off on his missions.

I'm not going to say too much about Attolia for fear of spoilers. But I will say that I both felt for her in her anguish and was utterly terrified of her at the same time.

The ending put a goofy grin on my face. And a few tears.

Excellent! 10 Jun 2002

This is a really great book! I really recommend it. I say this because this book has everything-mystery, humour, romance, adventure and lots more. It is about a young thief who has to steal something from the court of Attolia. While there he is seen and afterwards captured. The Queen of Attolia has his hand cut off-what can a one handed thief steal? Well quite a lot actually, after you have come out of depression, even Queen's that you just maybe have fallen in love with.....
I really enjoyed reading this book and I think it deserves six stars. 'Thief' also sounds very good and I can't wait to get that too.

This book takes place some time after the first book, 'The thief'. Gen sneaks around the palace of the Queen of Attolia, gets caught and is crippled and sent back to Eddis. This should have been the end of his (mis)adventures, but its not. 'The thief' was a basically a treasure hunt set in the mountains and forest. 'The Queen of Attolia' are more about politics and people, realms and relationships. It is very different, but I enjoyed it just as much. Megan Whalen Turner writes great plots, the kind you have to read at least twice. First time the plot twists leave you surprised but pleased. Second time it is a treat to pick up all the subtle clues. And her characters are wonderful, well developed and believable. And I just can't help loving Gen. He is skilled and intelligent and witty, but he also has the right amount of character flaws so that he never ever comes even close to being a Barry Stu. Finally, the world of Eddis, Attolia and the Mede empire is a world that is both interesting and convincing.
There's only one thing a potential reader should be aware of. Back when I picked up 'The thief' I did it because I love fantasy and it was labelled fantasy. But there is very, very little fantasy elements in it. No elves, no magical spells, no talking animals, etc. And it is inspired by ancient Greece, not by medieval Britain. But I completely forgot about fantasy and the lack thereof while reading 'the Thief' and the sequels. The supernatural elements are in just the right doses. So don't expect orcs or long bearded wizard and you shall not miss them one bit.
