The queen of Scottish ballads is definitely Jeannie Robertson. Not only does she know some exceptional ballads, but also her presentation is unique as she brings them to life. She presents the old folk stories wonderfully, with her warm and very musical voice. On this recording there are also some short interviews to be heard, where Jeannie gives background information about herself, about the ballads, and about her mother who taught them to her. The recording was made by Alan Lomax, who is likewise unique, because of his exceptional collection of folk and traditional music.

It takes a master to portray the various emotions of the joyful, sad and at times heart-breaking lyrics and stories folk music brings. This CD is packed with "traveling" stories, sung by the captivating, masterful singer Jeannie Robertson. I have truly enjoyed this compilation of song from the old people, and would highly recomend to anyone who enjoys learning of the past and coming to know of the hardships and sratagies of the generations before us to listen, come to love and sing along so the people of the 21st century may always keep the beauty of folk ballad singing alive.
