Product Description

Synopsis

Combining physics, philosophy and psychology, this book offers a revolutionary theory of the origins and nature of consciousness in terms of the new physics, pointing the way towards a new vision of the human self and its relationships, hence a new "quantum psychology" and a new "quantum morality".

From the Back Cover

'The Quantum Self' demonstrates how developments in modern subatomic physics demand a radical reappraisal of our conventional model of personality – indeed of our very idea of ourselves.

Guiding us through the strange and contradictory world of quantum mechanics, Danah Zohar argues that a more participative view of our relationship with the universe is essential if we are to discover our true nature. In place of the alienation and fragmentation imposed by traditional mechanistic science, we are offered a view of reality which effectively constitutes a new quantum psychology.

"Zohar's theory is brilliantly topical, answering the environmentalist's prayers for a holistic approach to nature and an escape from the spirit/matter dualism that has dominated western thinking from Plato to the modern Christian church."
GUARDIAN

"Zohar takes Fritjof Capra's classic 'The Tao of Physics' several steps further in this provocative use of quantum theory… A stimulating work, thoughtfully conceived and unusually thorough."
KIRKUS

"If you are looking for a travel guide to understanding society as it has been, or could be in the next century and beyond, Zohar's contribution will be worth the effort."
SAN DIEGO UNION

"Physics without fuss."
JEANETTE WINTERSON, 'Sunday Times'

A stunning alternative to some of the bleakly held views of pure materialism. This is a well researched well written and so easy to read that anyone regardless of their knowledge of science can get to grips with it. Since the dawn of quantum mechanics many have been crying out for a paradigm shift away from cold newtonian and reductionist ways of thinking, unfortunately most of physics has been reluctant to entertain such new ideas maybe as they cling to determinism as much as religious types cling to God, just as frightened to lose that they hold dear. Zohar challenges these ideas of clunking newtonian billiard balls and presents a very feasible theory, many of the chapter resonated with me on a human level and made me think, could the cold ideas of pure mechanistic physics give rise to the rich and wonderful life we experience and see all around us?

Most authors approaching these ideas get labelled as cranks, I think largely because they get carried away and don't real themselves in. Zohar does not suffer this way, her ideas are very measured and very well explained. She has excellent scholarly credentials, and is well respected. This book left me feeling positive and open to new ideas, a great easy going and charming read.

Danah got degrees in physics and philosophy from MIT and has created a well-researched, well-argued case for using quantum mechanics to describe consciousness, imagination, and relationships. With this foundation she then seamlessly progresses to what this "means" in terms of our place in the universe and how our society should become more "spiritually intelligent".

Danah has an enlightened philosophy grounded in scientific "fact"

A Very Difficult Read 12 Nov 2010
Format:Paperback
I'll say it straight out .. don't tackle this book if ur understanding of Physics/Quantum theory/Consciousness is very shallow .. b'cos, this lady takes no prisioners. She begins at a very high standard of learning .. and just goes on up from there .. she expects u to already know what she is talking about. Many of her pages u will have to read 2 or 3 times over, in a very quiet environment, to understand the complexity of what she is saying.
This book really does go well beyond the "Tao of Physics" by Capra, and her conclusions are very probably right as she explains what The TRUE NATURE OF REALITY is really all about.
Her insights are breathtaking and about as profound .. as profound can be.

If ur looking to extend yourself, challenge yourself .. then this read may well be for u. Good luck.
