This is a good book with simple and well explained methods which can easily be reproduced although some materials may be difficult to source as the book is quite old. However the copy you recieve is printed to order and suffers from severe fading on some pages. This is ok generally but on pages containing tables of formulas it can make it impossible to use. The other complaint I have is that the diagrams that a referenced constantly in the text are meant to be after the index but are missing which for the most part doesnt matter because the text expains most things clearly but it is a pain and means the book is incomplete.

A very old-fashioned book, in old-fashioned language and terminology, so I cannot judge if its information and advice can be completely trusted. I had hoped for a more up-to-date work of reference.

Really good? But not happy filling in a form that requires me to put more words than I need too

An oldie but a goodie. 24 Jun. 2013
By Jeff - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
O.K., this book is old. Many of the methods and chemicals are no longer used. At the same time much of what is here is still used today and some of the items are not to be found in other books. This is in fact the book that Weingart used as his reference guide. Much of what is here will prob never be used again unless you are a "retro pyro"; the shell section in particular has very dated material on making the shell casing. At the same time an item called a saucsisson (very similar to a comet) is very workable and not to be found in many other places. If you like pyrotechnics and don't mind a little dated material then I would recommend that you give this book a glance. The illustrations are very good. Many of the most highly touted pyro books give you very little in the way of working knowledge. This is not one of them. I personally found the age of the book to be a part of it's (if you will pardon the expression)charm. This is the only book I have ever seem where the author gives you info on how to be sure all of the stars in a roman candle shoot to the same height. The rocket section is my personal favorite. The fact that American Fireworks News chose to reprint this book some time back says a lot from my viewpoint. Don't just write it off because it is "old".

Quite dated 25 Aug. 2010
By W. Murray - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
This book, while well illustrated and complete, is so far out of date as to make it difficult to make good use of. Consider the following:
"A piece of zinc rainwater pipe, of suitable length, furnished with a bottom lid, or a couple of bungs, is convenient for keeping it in..."
One might determine that this line refers to making a storage container from a pipe, but perhaps only after a couple of readings. Still, the diagrams are good, provided you can get through the language to understand what they are diagrams of.

One Star 27 Aug. 2014

While I do enjoy this book, it should be known that it is missing about 10 tables of formula.
Not current information - historical 28 July 2014
By Alan Cain - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback Verified Purchase
Book same as other I received, from different vendor - same book, totally different cover, leading one to state be very careful about judging by the cover!! Contents are dated, illustrations are terrible and inadequate. As I said elsewhere, save up for Shimizu as this book is not helpful except as a historical curiosity. My comfort using any of the information here is very low; poor discussion of hazards and of toxicity and the instructions are obscure and confused.

Do not use this book except as a curiosity.
