More About the Author

Peter Vardy started out as a Chartered Accountant, working in South Africa before becoming chairman of UK listed companies. He started a Theology degree at King's College London, which soon became an MA and then a PhD on the concept of Eternity (supervised by Stewart Sutherland) at the age of 31.

After an RE PGCE, Peter became a lecturer at Heythrop College, University of London, becoming its Vice Principal in 1999, the first Anglican to hold such a senior position. Also in the late 1990s Peter began writing books for undergraduates, with the aim of reinvigorating his subject area. The Puzzle of God and The Puzzle of Ethics remain bestselling titles twenty years later, particularly popular with the generations of RS and Philosophy teachers and their proteges who also frequent Peter's conferences for Sixth Formers, which attract in excess of 10,000 people every year in the UK and more in Australia, New Zealand, Singapore and Hong Kong.

Known for his amazing collection of colourful jumpers, his coffin/coffee table, his love of Harry Potter and Pooh Bear - and those videos - Peter is often credited with contributing to the resurgence in the popularity of Religious Studies and Philosophy in schools and universities. Theology wrote "Peter Vardy is a gifted communicator. He is the best popularizer of the philosophy of religion currently working in Britain..."

'Anything from Vardy's pen is worth reading ... his arguments must be debated, and more adequate alternatives found.' Third Way --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

From the Back Cover

Popular introduction to moral arguments surrounding the subject of sex written in a clear and readable style.

Peter Vardy tackles the challenging issues of sexual ethics in today’s society, tracing the history of modern thinking from biblical sources and church history. He explains the ethical framework from which people take their views and looks at subjects such as sex and the place of marriage, homosexualtiy, masturbation, contraception and rape.

“Peter Vardy has written an outstanding introduction to the whole realm of human sexuality. It is clear, accurate, theologically informed, historically sensitive, compassionate, open and committed. Whether Christian or non-Christian, this is absolutely essential reading.”

Firstly I should say, Ive not read the thing cover to cover yet! I have read the blurb on the back and skimmed it a bit, reading an odd chapter here and there.... so far, and it does seem to cover a lot of cultural influences which is great...BUT...

Its a bit preachy, the blurb on the back says "The Puzzle od Sex cherishes the value of lovemaking and emphasizes its mystery and depth"... and yeah it really does (by the bucketful, and irritatingly if you dont conflate sex with lovemaking to quite the extent Vardy does!!)

The chapter on 'One Night Stands'is particularly irritating, and there seems to be no acknowledgement of the'friends with benefits'phenomena that spans the middle ground between commited relationship and sexual release.

I was hoping for a book that explained why as a culture we are conflating sex and lovemaking, and sex and success, and sex and happiness etc... and Im not entuirely sure this entirely fits the bill. It comes down a bit too heavily on its own view of what sex 'should be', and damage and dehumanizing is talk about quite a bit.

If you dont think sex always needs a side salad of "commitment and love", you wont know whether to laugh or cry at the summary on page 191. I went with laugh...
