Product Description

Product Description

A popular introduction to arguments about the existence of evil in the world. Complex issues are explained in clear and entertaining language.

Another title in Peter Vardy’s much acclaimed Puzzle series, setting out the classic dilemma of Christian thought – why is there evil in the world if God is good? It seems that either God is not powerful enough, or not good enough to prevent it. Vardy draws on the work of Christian and secular writers to explain the issues.

Vardy looks at the argument of free will, the devil, natural evil and absolute value judgments.

‘A refreshing book which teachers and students of religion and philosophy, plus many lay people, will find clear and readable.’
Catholic Herald

‘He grapples with a vast theme with an admirable clarity of thought and purpose.’
Baptist Times

I found this book extremely useful during the course of my AS level studies on the philosophy of religion. Vardy outlines the main arguments in a concise and comprehendable format, often referring to scholars.

The man, the legend.. 19 April 2009
Format:Paperback
Now its rare i review a book, i enjoy reading them too much to spend time writing about them afterwords. I studied under Peter Vardy when i was at university and i honestly have to say the man is a legend of our time. His writing is concise and incredibly well researched, and his personal manner is beyond delightful. He has a flawlessly perfected a method of teaching that carries through in much of his writing, his puzzle books barely scrape the surface of what he has to offer and for anyone planning on studying philosophy or religion/theology his books will become the closest thing to clarity of thought available. He has the potential to become a modern father of philosophy, it is only his shrewdness and refusal to publish his own theories that keep him from his rightful seat next to god.....it would certainly be far more deserved than that 'other' bastard son!
