Book Description

If you've ever felt a crumpling in your chest when another friend tells you that they're pregnant… If you've ever wondered why everyone else seems to find it so easy… If you've ever experienced the pursuit of motherhood… This book is for you.

It is currently estimated that one in five couples have difficulty conceiving. Hepburn’s book which describes her long and, at times, heartbreaking journey to have a child has been called a cross between Bridget Jones Diary and Eat Pray Love for the infertile generation.

'After reading dozens of fertility books over the years, I’ve realised how hard it is to get a memoir about treatment right and to tell your own story in a way that other people will actually want to read, but Jessica Hepburn has managed it brilliantly in her book The Pursuit of Motherhood... Whether you’re at the start of your journey or in the middle of treatment, I think you’ll find something for you in Jessica’s book.'
Kate Brian, Author of The Complete Guide to IVF and The Complete Guide to Female Fertility

'I started the book a few hours ago and have just finished it… I couldn’t stop reading. I love it. The honesty wrapped in engaging writing with a liberal dose of humour is awesome. I want everyone to read it so people can really understand what the journey is like.'
Russell Davis, Fertility Coach, Author and Speaker

'A much needed, honest, moving and compassionate book. At times laugh-out-loud funny, at times incredibly touching, I know it will be of such help to many people.'

'I have just read The Pursuit of Motherhood in under 24 hours, I could not put it down. It felt like having a long intimate conversation with the author or having stumbled across her diary and once you join her on the rollercoaster ride of trying, and failing, to start a family, you are desperate to see if there is a happy ending. This book is heartbreaking, informative, inspiring and funny! An excellent read for anyone experiencing infertility or for anyone who wants to understand a little of what it is like.'

5.0 out of 5 stars I couldn't put it down! 3 Feb. 2014
Format:Paperback
I started your book a few hours ago and have just finished it…I couldn’t stop reading. I love it. The honesty is wrapped in engaging writing with a liberal dose of humour. Having been through the fertility journey and now work with others on their journey I thoroughly recommend this book. If you are on the journey yourself, you may know how it can be a lonely place as so many people just don't understand what it's like, this is a perfect book to give to friends/family and also one for you to recognise you are not alone!

5.0 out of 5 stars An important book - for everyone 11 Feb. 2014
Format:Paperback
I know it's a cliche, but the reason this is such a great book is because it's about an ordinary couple in extraordinary circumstances - going through their own private hell, in fact. That's why I wouldn't just recommend this book to anyone going through IVF or dealing with infertility - the story is far more universal than that - anyone who has been or is in a relationship should love this book. Jessica Hepburn writes with such humour and honesty that it's very easy to relate to her and her situation, even if it's something you haven't been through yourself. She has a real talent for dialogue, and she's also very self-aware, so you become drawn into her situation and desperate to know how things turn out. It's a story about relationships, about human love and loss - and about questioning who you are and what you want. Through the author's very personal journey, the book implicitly addresses a broader issue - that of the pressure society puts on women to become biological mothers, and begins to explore the question of what the alternatives for women might be.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing honest book 2 Mar. 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I have just read this book in 2 days, have not been able to put it down, it made me laugh and cry. Very similar to a bridget jones style book, for those that have struggled or are struggling with infertility this is the story the clinics don't tell you about.

5.0 out of 5 stars You need to read this book. 6 April 2014
By Jojo
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
If like Jessica, (& me) you are reading this, then you are like thousands of other women & couples out there who are desperate for something that everybody else - it seams - can get so easily except you - and me!
Jessica tells her story with warmth, humour, an edge of sadness, but never with self pity. You will find yourself laughing & crying, but most importantly for anyone of us who is in this situation, you will say - 'that's exactly how I feel'.
Unless you find yourself walking up the steps of an IVF clinic, you wont understand the feelings of hope, disappointment & loneliness that is felt by everyone of us in Jessica's situation. - That is why this book is so important. Its a story that needs to be told & its about time the subject of Infertility had a voice!
Well done Jessica & thank you for telling your story.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Read 17 Mar. 2014
By C Lee
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This is one of the most honest pieces of writing I have read. I believe that the feelings of isolation Jessica Hepburn describes are ones that many of us have experienced at some point in our lives, for one reason or another. In this respect, some of the ideas in the book are universal ones.
This book is not just about the pursuit of motherhood, but also about womanhood. Hepburn's is a voice, brave enough to speak out about the difficult topic of infertility, which is too often brushed aside or left unacknowledged.
I really hope this book's appeal will be widespread as it's a great piece of writing regardless of your own position in relation to the 'pursuit of motherhood'.

Whether you're about to embark on IVF or have already received treatment for infertility, this book will be an interesting read. Documenting one woman's journey through the highs and lows of IVF treatment, it provides both laugh out loud moments and tear jerking tales. Everyone who reads 'The Pursuit of Motherhood' will identify with Jessica in some way and can't be helped but moved by her frankness and honesty about her struggle to become a mother. A fantastic book, deserved of 5 stars.

A compelling and brutally honest account of Jessica's struggle with infertility and the roller coaster of multiple IVF treatments and a must read for women and clinicians alike; it will make you laugh and cry. It's a true life story but reads like a novel at times and written very well indeed it just flows along - I found myself staying up into the wee small hours to finish it. An important book that surely must spark a debate about the state of fertility treatment in the UK in 2014.
