5.0 out of 5 stars Mind blowing. 5 Sep 2005
By Lindon
Format:Audio CD
There can be few wrods to describe an album like this. Mind numbingly awe inspiring is all I can think of. The composition of this album equals The Unseen Stream, which is, in my opinion one of the major albums in NeoCelt at the moment. While many may point to Troy contributing more to Iona, I must say, I find his work here to be at some of his greatest peices.

A must have.

5.0 out of 5 stars Troy Donockley 28 Sep 2005
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
Troy Donockley has built up a formidable reputation as both a Composer/Arranger and Musician/Performer and as a leading virtuoso of the Uilleann Pipes.
He has had his orchestral work performed in venues such as The Royal Festival Hall and Glasgow Concert Hall with soloists as illustrious as Maire Brennan (Clannad) and Lesley Garrett.
Born in Cumbria into a musical family, his musical journey has taken many diverse cultural turns, all within a focused plan to compose music of uncompromised integrity and passion. All join to create something very individual and very real...
His first album "The Unseen Stream" released in 1998, was critically acclaimed globally for its unique fusion of Traditional/Classical forms.
His new album "The Pursuit of Illusion" continues to push the boundaries with a highly individual blend of the English Classical and Irish Folk traditions. Music from both albums has been used in Film/TV all over the world inc BBC1, BBC2, C4, Discovery and CNN.
Troy has performed and is known all over the place - Europe, Middle/Far East, Australia, Japan, USA and has recorded with various other artists such as Clannad, Maddy Prior (he has co-produced her last four albums), Roy Harper, Alan Stivell, Del Amitri, Midge Ure and many more.

5.0 out of 5 stars Minimalist Classical Folk Rock 19 Oct 2006
By John D. Dooley - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
Is it an illusion that Minimalist Classical music can intermix with Celtic Folk Rock? No, it's a reality with the skillful talent of Troy Donockley who after playing with Maire Brennan (Clannad) & Lesley Garrettso, as well as many other musical artists, now plays mainly with Iona & Dave Bainbridge. This is one of his few solo works still in print.

I first heard the song "Conscious" on a live CD "When Worlds Collide" with Dave Bainbridge. There the song had only 2 people performing, where in this original version the theme trades off unto many hands. Isn't it strange how most of the time the first version heard is what you use to measure other versions with? In this cause "Conscious" on the live CD sounds more controlled because of the limited instruments used, while in the original version on this CD the main theme trades off every line which at first causes a lack of focus. Could this be why the title of the song is called "Conscious"? On most of the other songs use Minimalist Classical music like Steve Reich, Phillip Glass, or maybe Michael Nyman as the background beat while the main melody or themes are normally Celtic Folk music. In other words, the entire CD is like Dvorak New World Symphony #9 in reverse, adding modern classical music to a Celtic folk music base line. There are only a few songs with lyrics which seems (Platonic opinion) to create a story about a turn of the 20th century Chinese magician Chung Ling Soo who died while performing a catch a bullet act after World War One. Well produced to give any professional stereo a work out.
