5.0 out of 5 stars Boys Keep Swinging 22 Jan 2009
By Mulwharchar TOP 1000 REVIEWER
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
The Boys inexplicably slipped under the radar in the late 70s/early 80s but as this excellent 2 disc set shows, they should have been huge. Disc 1 covers their punchy, melodic brand of punk which blended the amphetamine guitar attack of The Damned or The Adverts with the souped-up R&B of Eddie & The Hot Rods and 999, and spawned at least one bona fide classic in 'Brickfield Nights', their ode to teenage kicks on the backstreets of Leeds. The Boys were always better musicians than it was fashionable to admit and the evolution from punk to new wave showcased on Disc 2 allowed them room to experiment. Standout tracks include the Rolling Stones-inspired 'You Can't Hurt A Memory' (a fixation first aired on the 'We Love You' rip-off 'I Love Me'), the rock & roll roll of honour 'Terminal Love' (it's not about airports...), the late period Lennon-ism of 'Independent Girl' and the bitter loser's lament 'Jimmy Brown', a first cousin to The Jam's 'Billy Hunt' or The Undertones' 'Jimmy Jimmy'. Great old-school punk/new wave: they don't make 'em like that anymore.

5.0 out of 5 stars Too Good For Words 2 Jan 2011
By Timothy K. Schwader - Published on Amazon.com
Formed, essentially, from the ashes of London SS and Hollywood Brats in the mid-70s, The Boys were responsible for melding the glorious sound of power-pop with the then-developing sound of punk, and that, my friends, is a beautiful thing. I nearly wept with joy when I first saw the tracklist on this double-disc set: 47 songs in total, including the original single versions of `I Don't Care' and `I Love Me'; an acoustic version of `Little White Lifeline'; 5 demos, including `Hollywood Brats'; and, of course, the biggies like `Livin' In The City,' `Poor Little Rich Girl,' `Tenement Kids,' and the jewel in the crown that is `Brickfield Nights.' The Boys were the first to put the pop into punk, and this set proves that they were also the best at it.
