Book Description

4 May 2006
Tom refers to his grandfather as 'Collar' because he drags him around on a lead. One day, Tom decides that he will take Collar on a walk to see the puddles he has named after the members of the family, but the puddles are not there. Collar insists that this is because it hasn't rained, but Tom believes that it's just because they haven't been put in yet. He wanders off, leaving Collar talking to Mrs Whitebobblehat, and comes across just the person he needs . . . Finally, puddles restored to their full, family-resembling glory, Tom and Collar go home for tea.

Review

"The tender and surprising story is enriched by the scenery of Sussex lanes in summer . . . Briggs places magic in the context of the everyday and moves us" (The Sunday Times)

"Puts sentiment, science and imagination comfortably side by side" (Guardian)

"A lovely blending of realism with a child's imagination and a magical world" (The Bookseller)

"Briggs is on top form once more with this strange and moving story" (Books for Keeps)

"A tale of childhood joy and innocence, this has the hallmark of a Brigg's classic, where, for a moment, reality is suspended and imagination takes over" (Manchester Evening News)

5.0 out of 5 stars The Puddleman 19 May 2010
By H. Lowe
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
My (now adult) kids loved the Raymond Briggs stories and I bought this one for my nephew who is 5. He even takes it to bed and school with him! One delighted little boy - the added excitement for him was a parcel addressed to him, delivered by the postman. Thanks Amazon - more orders on their way.

A lovely, subtle and funny story - works on different levels to delight both kids and parents. Beautiful illustrations too, of course.

4.0 out of 5 stars Thumbs Up! 27 Mar 2014
Format:Paperback
This is less of a graphic novel and more of an illustrated children’s story. In the familiar oversized format this has a low page count, chunky panels and sparing dialogue. It has the wonderful pencils, bright colours and ever present green of the Briggs style.
This is definitely one to delight the younger reader whatever their age. You can tell Briggs is using his own experience with children, and not just from the credits at the back. His observation and understanding of a child’s speech and logic is evident throughout this charming tale.
A brief encounter but one that can’t fail to make you smile.
Thumbs Up!
