Product Description

Product Description

Poker demands many skills and strategies. To be
successful, you must be able to master all of them and then apply them
at the appropriate times. They include proper hand selection,
appropriate aggression, bluffing, semi-bluffing, understanding tells
and telegraphs, choosing the right games, and reading hands. These
skills do not come easily since they require unnatural actions. You
cannot win just by "doing what comes naturally." This book does
not provide strategic advice; you should get it from other Two Plus
Two books. Dr. Schoonmaker is concerned only with the way that
psychological factors affect your own and your opponents’ ability to
play properly.

For example, have you ever wondered why some players seem extremely aggressive while others are passive? Why some are tight and others loose? Furthermore, have you ever wondered why some tactics seem to come naturally to you while others don’t?

This text will answer many of these questions. It will explain why you and your opponents play the way you do. Many people know how to play properly, but play poorly. Simply learning strategy does not mean that you will apply it properly.

The author also suggests strategic adjustments that you should make to improve your results against different kinds of players, and he suggests personal adjustments that will help you to play better and enjoy the game more.

I don't want to write a long review about this book so I'll keep it short. If you are an advanced poker player and have various other books that give you starting hand charts and advice on how to play certain hands, but you want to move onto a higher level of thought while playing, then this is the book for you. Brilliantly written, concise, detailed and eye-opening, it added to my game plus infinitum. One of the all time greatest poker books ever written.

One of the problems with being a UK-based poker player is that, whilst the game here is mostly played pot-limit, most of the decent poker books are written quite specifically for limit games. Alan Schoonmaker's excellent book is one of the exceptions. Although it does use limit games to provide the examples (which means that you do need to understand at least the basics of limit play to get the best out of it), the nature of the subject makes this much less of a problem than in books about tactical play. The bottom line is that reading this book has improved my game dramatically.

sorry to disagree with the previous reviewers but i have a decent poker library and i have found this book to be the least useful.it seems primarily deigned to sell copies of other two plus two books.full of lines like"for furhter details see stranskys poker for advanced players"etc. it might be of use to a beginner who doesn't really know what their style of play is but advanced players certainly have no use for this book.all in all a disappointment and not up to the usual high standard of the publishers poker books.
