Book Description

“Psychoanalysis itself and the lines of thought to which it gives rise,” said C. G. Jung, “are only a beginner’s attempt compared to what is an immemorial art in the East”—by which he was referring to the millennia-old study of the mind found in Yoga. That tradition was hardly known in the West when the discipline of psychology arose in the nineteenth century, but with the passing of time the common ground between Yoga and psychology has become ever more apparent. Georg Feuerstein here uses a modern psychological perspective to explore the ways Hindu, Buddhist, and Jaina yogas have traditionally regarded the mind and how it works—and shows how that understanding can enhance modern psychology in both theory and practice.

2.0 out of 5 stars NOTE: this is a DRM book 25 Jan. 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I haven't read the book yet, so please do not take this review as a review of the content of the book. It is not.

This review is about the format of the book. I am disappointed to discover it is DRM. I want to be able to read it on Calibre on my laptop, as my husband is often using our kindle when I also want to read, but when you buy a DRM book the seller controls how you can use the book even though you have paid for the book.

I will be more careful in the future and will simply not buy DRM books. For more info on DRM books [...]

5.0 out of 5 stars Yoga from a Western Psychological approach, by one of the foremost Yoga Scholar-Practitioner of the XX century. 13 May 2014
By Pablo - Published on
A masterful synthesis of east and west perspectives of the mind, well written, thoroughly informed, and in a sobrious approach.
Georg Feuerstein stands as one of the foremost scholars-practitioners of Yoga of the XX century, acknowledged not only in the west, but also in highly learned circles of native indian scholars. His scope and profoundity on eastern traditions from a western psychological and philosophical outlook can only be compared with Carl Gustav Jung research (The Psychology of Kundalini Yoga, Psychology of Religion, Psychology and the East) and Herbert Guenther (From Reductionism to Creativity, Matrix of Mystery, Philosophy and Psychology in th Abhidharma), adding that he was an experienced and mature practitioner of Yoga, not only a scholar. He really had reached the goal anticipated by Henri Bergson, that a true philosopher has to know reality no only with his mind, but also with his soul.

A seminal work for Yoga teachers, psychotherapist interested in go beyond the straightjacket of reductionistic psychological approaches, and to those who are doing Yoga and Meditation practices, the true explorers of the Inner Space today.

5.0 out of 5 stars A scholar 2 Jun. 2014

An amazing scholar of in-depth yogic philosophy, with a superb knowledge left for students and teachers to devour at length these profound teachings that ground any practice of yoga.
5.0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Read! 8 July 2015
By Jerald Ogrisseg - Published on
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Georg has written an excellent book, for understanding Psychology from the Yogic Perspective. There is so much material on Asana and the Physical Practice of Yoga. This work is a breath of fresh air, and returns us to the original Yoga, which was not about mastery of the body only, by mastery of the Self, the mind, the emotions. Without meditation, Yoga is merely exercise. Georg dives deep not only into the Mental Aspects of yoga, (with many references to scientific studies), but also the concept of Energy Anatomy- that we have "layers" of being- i.e. physical, energetic, emotional, intellectual, spiritual, etc.... and explains how true Yoga Practice is about integration.

5.0 out of 5 stars Yoga is so much more than just contorted bodies 25 Mar. 2014
By Suman - Published on
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Sometimes it takes an outsider to get the true essence Yoga, this Indian exercise/philosophy/contemplation/art, but more than that, a key to the heaven on earth. I salute the author for diving in depth in Hindu mythology and distilling the true nectar from the colossal system of knowledge. If you are into waking up happy, working with satisfaction, in harmony with your family, society and nature and sleep in peace, this book is for you.
