Review

"The Psychology Of Success is an ideal read for budding sales executives. It identifies the emotional drivers that help progress and explores what can be learned from those who succeed."

Daily Express. August 2009

Product Description

Talent. Everybody has it, but just how good are you at using it?

Talented people don’t believe in reaching their peak – they live a life that crests on any number of new and different waves. Some of these peaks may be higher than others, some offer totally different challenges and rewards, but whatever stage of life they’re at they see no reason why they can’t fulfil their potential to reach a new high.

The Psychology of Success shows how you too can live a life of many peaks. By speaking to a wide range of people who have experienced both success and failure, Judith Leary-Joyce has uncovered the secrets of serial achievement. Some of these people have already achieved many different career and life peaks, some are still getting there and others have resigned themselves to never making it. By drawing on these studies, and her extensive experience as a psychologist and business coach, Judith sets out a clear path for you to follow in your quest to live the most satisfying and rewarding life you can.

This book will help you:

  • Identify the emotional drivers that help you move forward and those that hold you back
  • Explore the attitudes of real life people who are successful and what can be learned from their experience
  • Address your assumptions about life and work, and discover how to ‘peak’ in different ways, at different times

If, like me, you are one of those people who has read loads of books about self improvement you need look no further. This is the one I was waiting for. I love it because it explains things in practical ways. So often I am left understanding the theory but frustrated because I can't put it into practice. This book provides a deep understanding of success and also takes you through a series of easy steps to set you on the path - just brilliant. If you want to know your achiever style or your core talent I'd strongly encourage you to get it.

One of the things I like the most about this book - and the author - is that the techniques are demonstrated using real-life examples of serial achievers. Judith starts off the book with a list of the serial achievers and what they do, giving them a lot of credit for her understanding of serial achievement. These serial achievers come from diverse backgrounds and have acheived in diverse ways - again very different from your usual self-help book examples.

In addition there are exercises throughout the chapters that assist you in identifying where you are in regards to the discussion in that particular chapter.

I personally found that different parts of the book are useful to me in this stage of my own transition, but it is the type of book I can refer back to throughout my career, picking out certain exercises that are aligned to the particular challenge I am facing at that time.

A great read, a useful tool for self-improvement and one to keep up on the bookshelf - I would highly recommend this book to anyone!

I'm not normally a fan of self development books. As a rule I find them simplistic, patronising and laughably disconnected from the real world. As a result I was wary of this book but I've read and really rate both of the author's earlier books so I decided to have a look. I'm very pleased I did. So apologies for a longish review.

Here are two good reasons to invest your time and money with this book. First: the idea of "serial achievement" - going from one peak of attainment to another - though not necessarily in a straight line. That is an example of the key strength of this book - it reflects the real world. Life isn't (at least not in my experience) an ever upwards trajectory. There are plateaus - there are rough patches where you don't know what you want to do next ("flying in fog" the book calls it). This book acknowledges and even encourages that. Another way the book is grounded in the real world is in the interesting choice of case studies. In most cases books like this either use examples of insanely successful people whose story seems unattainable to mere mortals or something that journalists call "composites", ie made up stories that pull to together bits and pieces from some real people and edit them nicely to make the example work. I really don't think the author has done that here - she has found some really interesting real people who have achieved a measure of success in one or more fields - but they are people who wouldn't normally figure in this sort of book: Jim Al Khalili the physicist and TV presenter - a Master Chef winner who used to be a barrister before deciding to become a chef, the British number one wheelchair tennis player. All have something to useful to tell us and all of them give the book a feel of success, but real and attainable success that relates to normal people.

Secondly, the book is intelligent but in no way heavy or academic. An example would be the author's concept of "personal gravity". As I understand it she is using physical gravity (the force that controls what is physically possible on our planet) as a metaphor for the bundle of mindsets and personal experiences, comfort zones and life pressures that we carry with us and which effectively control what is possible in our personal world. The key difference, as she points out, is that while we can't change physical gravity, we can change our personal gravity. I find this metaphor very powerful - if the world's physical gravity was too heavy we would be crushed and unable to move - if it was too light we would just float around aimlessly (my physics might be a bit dodgy there but you get what I mean). Likewise if our personal gravity isn't just right it will really impact of what we can achieve - either holding us back or leave us drifting. And that is just chapter one! The rest of the book builds on this - the whole thing is an excellent and very worthwhile read.
